“Which you conveniently never had again,” I volley back.

“I swear to God, if you don’t stop with this right now—”

“You’ll do what?” I challenge, looking forward to his reaction. Challenging him has brought me delicious paybacks in the past. Max doesn’t disappoint. He pulls me away from the window of the nursery room and into a neighboring corridor. Then he pushes me against a wall and kisses me raw.

“Mmm, I think I’ll annoy you some more,” I tell him. “Your I’m-annoyed-with-you kisses are the best. I’m surprised you even took the time to pull me to this corridor.”

“Of course, I couldn’t let the babies see me kissing you against a wall.”

I chuckle. “What?”

“It’s not good for them to see that.”

For a split second I’m convinced he’s pulling my leg, but no, he’s all serious.

“Let me get this straight. You don’t care if you kiss me in front of my clinic, or in the middle of the street, or in front of the nurses here, but a room full of babies can’t see us?”

“They’re impressionable.”

That’s it. I can’t hold the laughter in anymore. Giggles bubble out of me, loud and uncontrollable. “They have no idea what’s happening around them, Max.”

“You can never know. What if it influences them in some way? I’m not taking any risks.”

Ah, I foresee Mia and Elena having to deal with one too many overprotective uncles. Max will probably lead the pack.

“Do you want to spend the night at my place?” he asks me. “I need to sleep next to you tonight.”

“Sure, let me just call Mrs. Wilson.” She’s been helping out a lot lately. Caressing his cheek, I kiss him softly. I need to sleep next to him tonight too.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Emilia

Something is different between us when we walk inside his apartment. Maybe it’s the fact that we experienced the birth of the twins together, but I feel much closer to Max. He and I have experienced many things together throughout our history, but this was different, special.

In the dimly lit living room, Max wraps his arms around my waist. His lips touch mine, soft, warm, and demanding. I push my body against his, needing to be even closer to him. Fisting the fabric of his shirt, I sigh in his mouth.

Max leans his forehead against mine, and we just enjoy each other in silence. As I sense his warm breath on my skin, my age-old desire for motherhood kicks in hard. I know it’s not just because I was looking at a room full of babies, but also because I’m finally with the right man. One who makes me feel safe and loved, with whom I laugh about the silliest things. One whom I trust with all my secrets and wishes.

“I’m jealous,” Max says. “You just had an entire conversation in your head, and I wasn’t part of it.”

“Stop reading me so well. It’s unnerving.”

Kissing my forehead, he steps back, surveying me from head to toe.

“I’ll do something else then,” he says in a low voice, full of promise. He removes my shirt, kissing my neck as the fabric falls to my feet. Not one to waste time, I turn around, undressing him as well, until we’re both just in our underwear.

I can’t help giving him the once-over. God, I don’t think I could ever tire of watching him. Taking my hand, he leads me to his bedroom.

“Lie on the bed,” he commands. His words spur a primal need inside me, and all I can do is nod. Shaking with desire, I do as he says, and he leans over me, threading his fingers through my hair.

“I love your hair,” he murmurs.

“It’s wild today.” I shimmy underneath him, my legs wide open, my inner thighs cradling his groin.

“That’s what I like most. And your lips. They are perfect.” He strokes his thumb against my upper lip and then the lower one. Feeling bold, I open my mouth, sucking on his thumb, grazing it with my teeth. Max sucks in a sharp breath. “I love every part of you. Especially your feisty side.”

“Figures,” I tease, pushing him slightly off me so I can have better access to his neck, which I lavish with kisses, biting it gently.
