“So, um,” she began, tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear, “Nick says you guys like things kinda rough?”
Josh locked the door behind them. “You’re kidding, right? He didn’t tell you?”
Gemma frowned. “Tell me what?”
“I didn’t think it was appropriate,” Nick answered with a shrug. “Especially not at a bar packed with people.”
“Oh, come on, Nick,” Caleb said with a scowl. “We all promised that if we ever brought a girl home, we’d be honest about it. Upfront. Remember?”
Nick grimaced. “I do. Which is why none of us have brought home any women in the past few months.”
Josh snorted. “Well, what did you expect after the last time?”
Gemma stood in her living room, staring. What the hell were these guys talking about? More importantly, what had she gotten herself into?
She wet her lips. “Um… the last time?”
Nick sighed. “She won’t believe us. Not without a demonstration.”
“Well, I’m not going to do it,” Josh said. “It gets me all riled up. I won’t sleep a wink tonight.”
“Me either,” Caleb agreed. “Gives me the munchies every damn time.”
“Okay,” Gemma said more forcefully, “what the hell is going on here?”
“I’ll do it,” Nick said. He turned to Gemma. “I’ll show her what we are.”
Her stomach dropped and an icy fear seized her. Oh, God, she thought, leave it to me to bring home a pack of serial killers…
But she soon realized it wasn’t serial killers she had to be worried about.
Nick stepped forward, removing his shirt and exposing the hard muscles of his chest and abs. Gemma tried not to lick her lips as he next worked on his belt, slipping the tab through the buckle and then unbuttoning his pants.
He pulled them down and stepped out of them, leaving him only in his boxers. But soon he removed those too, revealing his Adonis lines and where they led to: a very thick, hard cock.
It was so beautiful. Gemma had to admire its smoothness and the red, velvety head gently bobbing with each of Nick’s breaths. When she met his gaze, however, she saw that something had changed. Something that had little to do with his nakedness.
His eyes were glowing. And soon those muscles were bulging even bigger and his back was bending, and with sickening pops and twists his ligaments and organs stretched and rearranged. Thick tufts of brown fur sprouted over him from head to toe, and soon she was no longer staring at a man, but at a great grizzly bear standing on all fours in her living room.
The bear dug its claws into the floor, then reared back a little. It was too tall for her ceiling, but even sitting back on its haunches, it was a terrifying sight.
And Gemma did feel terror. But something else, too. Something closer to awe.
“You’re…” she whispered. So much about Nick had changed, and yet his eyes remained the same. She couldn’t believe the implications of what she’d just seen, but she could think of no other explanation. “You’re a… a…”
“Werebears,” Caleb said softly. He stepped out from behind Nick’s shaggy, hulking form. “We’re werebears, Gemma. We’re all part of a clan of shifters just trying to eke out an existence in this modern world. And you need to know that before you agree to take things further with us.”
“You don’t expect me to let you into my bedroom like this,” she said, eyeing Nick’s bear form warily. “Do you?”
“Of course not,” Josh assured her. “But some of our supernatural strength translates to our human bodies. Especially in the heat of the moment.”
“And the last time we let a woman in on this, she reacted… badly,” Caleb added.
Gemma’s head was spinning. She clumsily pulled out one of her dining chairs and sat on it. “I’m going to need you to explain that,” she murmured.
Nick’s bear form was melting away, and in its place stood the man himself again. Gemma shook her head in utter disbelief. I can’t believe this is happening to me.
He said, “The girl in question took off running. Told the cops we were some kind of sickos using bears to intimidate our victims into having sex with us.” He ran a hand through his hair, as though checking to make sure all the fur was gone. “We had to leave town pretty quick after that.”
