She looks up at me, earnestly. “I won’t. Tell me.”

She looks so young in that moment, so hopeful, that I find myself transported back to the days when she came to me for reassurance, and I find myself lost as I smile. “I love you. You are my whole world, Kendall. I adore you.” With an afterthought, I add, “You’re still a pain in the ass.”

“Shut up!” She beams now.

Something in me melts at the happiness in her eyes.

“I love you, too,” she states with no hesitation. “I’ve always loved you.”

“I’m not the same person I was back then. I take what I want, damn the consequences. I’m not kind and I’m not considerate,” I whisper against her forehead. “And now I’ve taken you. I won’t give you back.”

Her eyes turn dark. “If I want to leave, I will. Don’t underestimate me, Caleb. I’m also not the same person I was back then. I’m my own person.”

I recall her encounter with Arthur, and I close my eyes fleetingly. “A battle of wills then. I’ll do my best to make sure you never want to leave me then.”

“As long as you know.” She sounds satisfied.

This time, I reach down and take her lips in a kiss, the intention behind it clear.

She doesn’t resist, sighing into my mouth.

My hands reach for the back of her dress and I pull the zip down.

The sound of it, makes her freeze, and she breaks the kiss, looking at me, her red mouth trembling, “I’ve never – I’ve never slept with anyone before.”

I knew this but hearing her say it out loud, makes me harden and I brush the strands of her hair from her face. “Do you want me to stop?”

She shakes her head, her face beetroot red. “I just–I don’t know what to do. I mean I’ve read books?”

“Books?” Curiosity pushes at me, making me want to tease her, mercilessly. “Just what sort of books have you been reading? Maybe you should read them to me.”

She flushes even more. “You know, romance books. And no, I won’t!”

I circle my hand around her neck, tilting her head back. “It would be fun. You can read to me and I can act out whatever is happening on you.”

Her pupils dilate at the joking suggestion, and her lips part.

I’m intrigued, making a mental note to be sure to try that. “Do you want me, Kendall?” My hold in her hair is firm, keeping her head tilted, facing upwards.

Her breathing is rapid, her chest heaving up and down, and she bites her lower lip as she answers, “Yes.”

“Do you trust me?”

She nods.

“Say it.”

Her voice is shaky as she breathes out, “I-I trust you.”

“Then trust me to take care of you.”

When she nods, I feel the triumph rising in me.

Kendall

Caleb’s touch is gentle as he propels me to my feet and turns me around.
