“I better go change my clothes and do the best I can to make myself presentable. Gary is quite charming, don’t you think, Jena?”

“Very. Just like my guys. Want some help?”

“Sure. You can help me pick out what I’m going to wear.”

Matt sat at the table with Jena, Kimmie, and Sean. He was enjoying his delicious double cheeseburger and hand-cut fries. They were all keeping their eyes on the couple in the booth by the window—Mom and Gary Ryder.

“This was supposed to be a light lunch, bro.” Sean shook his head.

“It is light.”

“By your standards, anything less than half a side of beef is light.”

“Kimmie, would you like some ice cream?” Alice asked, refilling all their drinks.

“Yes, please.”

“Just one scoop,” Jena said.

“Are you sure?” Alice asked. “If you are going to continue being a chaperone to your mother, you’re not leaving any time soon. Your mom and Gary just asked for one slice of apple pie to share.”

“Two scoops for Kimmie,” Matt said. “And a slice of pie for each of us.”

“Fine. I surrender to the majority.”

“Good deal,” Alice said. “It’s on the house.”

As she walked away, Jena smiled, turning her attention back to her mom’s direction. “I haven’t seen my mom this happy since dad passed away.”

Sean put his arm around Jena. “I think we might be witnessing a love connection taking shape.”

“Is Grandma going to get married?” Kimmie asked.

“We’re getting ahead of ourselves, baby. This is only a first date,” Jena said.

“Oh.” Kimmie turned to him and Sean. “When are you going to marry my mommy, Daddies? I want to be your flower girl.”

Jena’s cheeks turned a beautiful shade of pink. “Kimmie Taylor, you don’t ask those kinds of questions.”

“Why not?” Matt asked, looking into the love of his life’s green eyes. “I think it’s a very appropriate question.”

“Me, too,” Sean agreed.

Being of the same mind, they both left their chairs and got down on their knees. He grabbed Jena’s left hand and Sean her right.

“Jena Taylor, will you marry me?” he asked.

“And me?” Sean added.

“Yes, we will,” Kimmie said, clapping her hands together.

Matt looked into her sweet, innocent face, and he knew his love for Kimmie was boundless. “Little one, me and Daddy Sean want you forever. You are our precious girl.”

“Daddy Matt and I have talked about making you ours completely.” Sean smiled. “We want to marry your mommy and adopt you.”

“I will marry you.” Jena squeezed their hands. “You’ve just made me the happiest woman in the world.”
