Prologue

Chassie

Seven Years Earlier

“Come on, Chass. Hurry up.” I turn and look back at my parents' house, half hoping they see me sneaking out and half relieved they haven’t. I know it seems strange to wish to be caught, but in truth, I would do anything for any kind of attention from them. As it stands, today is my sixteenth birthday and could they be bothered to throw me a party, take me out to dinner… anything? No. They were more worried about this charity ball they have coming up. So, I decided to have my own fun.

“Sorry. I’m coming.” I tell her running to catch up. I am very conscious of my feet as I move because running in three inch heels is not very compatible with cobblestone. “Do you really think he will be there?” I ask my friend, inquiring about Lux Alberto, this extremely hot senior in my school. He is known as the resident bad boy. You know the type. Covered in tats, smokes, drives a motorcycle to school, skips every day. Yeah, that one.

“Hells yea. You know he has been eyeing you since school started. Robert said when he found out it was your birthday, he insisted he be there.” My stomach begins to bubble a bit, butterflies fluttering thinking about him and his smirk. I mean for as greedy as my body has been lately, letting me know she is aware of the things I could be feeling, you would never know I am still a virgin. Who knows, maybe this will be the night. “Did you hear from your brothers today?” she wiggles her eyebrows when she asks, and I turn up my nose. She has been lusting for my brothers since she knew what lust was and it is gross.

“Yes. They called me. They had some presents sent to me too.” I am a bit sad. My big brothers are the only ones who really care about me. Up until a couple of years ago, they were my protectors...my confidantes...my teachers. I love them and I miss Diezal and Axel every day. We sit in the back of the cab and my mind drifts as we drive to the only club in this town that doesn't card. I find myself wishing for a normal family and childhood. I mean don’t get me wrong, I know I am blessed and lucky to be born into a wealthy family, but what no one gets is that I would give it all up to have one basic thing. Love.

We make it to the club and walk right in. My eyes begin to scan the room, taking in the wall to wall frenzy of people dancing and making out, the music thrumming through me. My eyes spot the smoking section and I see Lux. He is talking to an older man I don’t recognize, but I shrug and nudge my friend. “There he is,” I say, motioning with my head.

“Let’s go.” We dance our way through the crowd, smiling and speaking to people we recognize along the way. By the time we make it to Lux, he is standing alone, looking out over the room.

“Why, it’s the princess?” He smirks.

“I’m no princess,” I tease him, not sure if he meant it in a nice way.

“You are the birthday girl.” He takes another drag of his cigarette. I nod, not sure what else to say. This is way more awkward than I thought it would be and if I am honest, something feels off. I am turning to let my friend know we should go find a table, when I feel his hand at my elbow. “Running off somewhere?” he asks into my ear. I shiver, all the hairs on my neck standing up.

“Just wanting to go dancing,” I say smiling so he knows everything is okay.

“Cool. Hey, listen, come outside with me for a second. I want to take a swig of this bottle, but I can’t in here. Then we can come back and dance. How’s that?” I look behind me to see if she is still there, but she is gone. Something is really wrong.

“I am going to go find Laine,” I say, pulling away from him.

“Don’t get shy on me now, princess. Not when I had something fun planned for us. Come on.” he pulls me out the back door. I struggle a bit, but even right now at this moment I don’t recognize the danger.

We end up in an alley and danger is finally becoming clear. “I really want to go back inside,” I tell him, trying to sound sweet.

“I know you are used to getting everything you want, but that's over.” His face is sinister, and fear encapsulates me. I am poised to scream when I hear a vehicle. Before I can react, I am thrown into darkness.
