“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“Uggghhhh!” Nikki cried, before storming off.

“Good for you kid,” said Father Frank, looking up from the hot grill. “Love ain’t worth it.”

Romeo passed another plate and then scanned the party. He found Ant standing alone at the bar, nursing a glass of wine. He weighed his options, debating the possible outcomes. Then he patted Benny on the back, took off his apron and said, “Cover me.”

“Where’s he going?” Mrs Monty asked her husband as Romeo jetted past them.

“I don’t know.”

Benny was also weighing his options. Once he had come to a decision he looked over the plates in front of him, grabbed the best looking one, pulled off his apron and called back to Frank. “Cover me.”

“What?! You too? Where are you going? I can’t do this alone you know…”

Benny also passed the Monty’s.

“And where’s he going?” asked Mrs Monty.

“Never mind that,” answered her husband. “Who’s manning the stand?”

Ant had finished her wine, ordered another glass and looked up. Coming right towards her was Romeo.

She hadn’t expected that, thinking that the last words she’d said to him would be the last words she would ever say to him. But there he was, coming right toward her, again. She was surprised to realize that her first feeling when she saw him coming wasn’t dread.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hey.”

“I know I’ve only got a second before your dad kicks me to the curb again. But I just want you to know that I’m sorry for whatever I did that hurt you.”

The bartender delivered her wine. She gave him a perfunctory smile then absentmindedly touched the glass. When he was gone, she spoke.

“Thank you.”

“Sure.”

They each looked away. The moment both full and empty at the same time.

Ant finally broke the silence. “You should go.”

“Ok. I will. But before I do I just want to tell you one more thing.”

She was touching her glass again, avoiding his gaze .

He spoke softly. “Hey.”

It was enough. Just enough to focus her attention. To get her to look at him.

“I love you,” he said, laying his heart at her feet. “That’s all I wanted to say. I love you.”

“You barely know me.”

“I know everything I need to know. I…”
