“Just about. Hold on…”

She dug her fingernail in a little harder. Just till Ant let out the slightest yelp.

“There. Now you’re perfect.”

Ant twisted around, trying to get a look at her back in the mirror. “Did you get it?”

“Yep. I got it.”

“Thanks,” said Ant, still twisting and looking.

“Anytime. You better get going. Don’t want to be late.”

“No. I. Don’t.”

“Have fun.”

Ant rushed downstairs and found her dad in the family room. He was sitting on the couch watching TV. The Yankees were getting creamed by the Red Sox. It was currently 0-5 in the eighth which meant he would be in a predictably bad mood that would only get worse if they lost.

“Hi daddy,” she said.

No answer.

Ant sat down in the chair across from him. “Daddy?”

Cap took a deep breath. “Yes?”

“Can we talk?”

“About what?”

“About this morning.”

“Yes!” Cap shouted as he jumped off the couch and stared intently at the TV. The Yankee’s batter hit a fly ball deep into the outfield.

Ant noted her dad’s intensity and held her breath.

The ball flew high and long and hung in the air for what seemed like forever. Till it was eventually picked off by the Sox’s center fielder.

“Oh come on!” shouted Cap as he defeatedly flopped back onto the couch. “Every damn time…”

“Daddy?”

Again no answer.

“Daddy?”

“What?!”

She should’ve known better.

“Nothing.” She got up off the chair and headed for the front door.

As she reached it. He spoke. “Come back here.”

She did.

“Where are you going?
