“Out.”

“Out where?”

Ant shifted uncomfortably. She got this same grilling all through high school. “With a friend.”

“What friend?”

“A friend.”

Cap leaned forward and picked his beer up off the coffee table. He took a long, exaggerated sip, smacked his lips, put the beer back down and settled comfortably back into the couch.

“So what’s so terrible about law?”

“I hate it,” she said thinking she might finally be getting to him. Getting him to understand.

“So.”

“What do you mean so?”

“I mean so.”

Ant quickly realized she wasn’t, and this was going to be the same conversation they had this morning. “I gotta go.”

Then her mom popped her head in. “Is he here yet?”

“No.”

“OMG… This is so exciting.” Then she put both hands on either side of Ant’s face, pulled her close and kissed her smack on the lips. “I’m making snacks!” she said, before disappearing back into the kitchen.

Ant was confused. “Who’s coming?”

As an answer her dad shrugged his shoulders and mumbled annoyingly. “I dunno.”

Ant shook her head. “I think you two are off your meds.” Then she waved a little see ya’ later wave and said, “Okay, I gotta go.”

Ant walked to the front door and just as she reached out to open it, ding dong , the doorbell rang. She opened it and standing in front of her was Patrick.

“Oh, hi,” he said, smiling broadly.

Huh? What is he doing here? she asked herself. “What is he doing here?” she asked her dad.

“He’s here to see me,” said Cap, standing up and waving him in. “Patrick come on in.”

“Nice to see you again,” Patrick said to Ant as he entered her home.

“Um… Yeah… Hi…”

He stopped in front of her. Patrick was pretty tall, at least six two, and he towered over her. “Going out?” he asked.

“Um. Yeah.” She didn’t know where to look. She glanced up but that just gave her a view straight up his nose. So she continued to look straight ahead, at the logo on his blue gingham, button down, Brooks Brothers shirt.

“Well, have fun,” he said, stepping by her and into the family room.

“Patrick, come on in,” continued her dad.

To say Ant was a little confused was an understatement. She couldn’t leave now. Not till she knew what was going on.

“Hey.” Patrick reached out to shake Cap’s hand. “Thanks for seeing me.”
