“Lick my ass?”

“Kick your ass!”

“Shut up back there!” Officer Cole glanced in the rear view mirror. From the angle he could only see Tyler.

Romeo continued, just loud enough for Tyler to hear. “Dude if that’s what you’re into that’s fine. I respect everyone’s right to choose, but you should know, I’m not interested.”

“Man, I am gonna frickin’ kill you.”

“What? Now you wanna kiss me?”

Tyler couldn’t control himself. He erupted. “I said I’m gonna frickin’ kill you!!”

“That’s it!” Officer Cole slammed on the brakes, grabbed his stun gun and shot Tyler right in the chest.

Tyler writhed and jerked as the taser discharged fifty thousand volts of knucklehead neutralizing electricity into his body.

“I said be quiet!” Then he dropped the taser, put the cruiser into drive and continued on toward the station.

It took a little while, but Tyler eventually stopped twitching and more or less melted, exhaustedly into the back seat.

Romeo gave him the once over. “You okay?”

Tyler couldn’t really move. The best he could do was twist his head around a bit. As he did he drooled out of the left corner of his mouth. Spittle dribbled down his chin.

“You know,” Romeo said. “You got something on your face .

A few minutes later Ant arrived at Brix. She stepped out of the Lyft and walked inside. It was lovely. The lights were low and the temperature was cool. It was a perfect respite from the hot summer evening.

It took a moment for her eyes to adjust, but soon she was able to see just fine. There were a few people dotted around. A young couple sitting shoulder to shoulder at the long zinc bar, well into their second bottle of rosé. Two women sharing a chardonnay at one of the high tops near the front door and a few more groups, none of them bigger than four, at the banquette that lined the wall. Who she didn’t see was Romeo.

Ant checked her watch. She was late. Which meant he was late. Or not coming. Or she missed him. She pulled her phone out of her purse. No messages.

She took a seat at the bar, by the front door and ordered a glass of gruner. She picked it up by the stem and held it in front of the small candle so that the flame illuminated the wine.

It was a beautiful golden color to begin with and the fire made it even more so. She gave the glass a little swirl and brought it to her nose. The aroma showed hints of grapefruit and lime. Then she took a sip. The wine’s bright acidity exploded in her mouth and the aforementioned flavors were confirmed, along with subtle notes of white pepper and dill. She liked it. She always did like a nice, crisp glass of gruner.

What she didn’t like was sitting alone in a bar.

Monty and Cap showed up on the steps of the police station at exactly the same time.

“Oh look who’s here,” Cap said snidely. “I should have known your kid was involved in this.

“Yeah, my kid,” Monty shot back. The sarcasm dripping from each syllable. “My kid is the one that’s always getting into trouble with the law. Your kid is here so often he’s got a reserved seat in the holding cell.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.”

“Provoloser.”

“What?”

“Provoloser,” said Cap, stepping forward and closing the distance between them.

Cap was bigger, no doubt about it. He was almost a foot taller than Monty and it was obvious that he was trying to physically intimidate him.
