“Good?” she asked.

“Sure,” he said.

She grabbed his phone and entered her number. “I get off at five today if you want to pick me up.”

“Sorry I can’t.”

“Oh. Okay. Tomorrow then?”

“Sure. Maybe.” He took another sip. “By the way, is Antoinette here?”

“Ant?” Nikki was taken aback. “Why do you want to talk to Ant?”

Patrick shrugged. “It’s no big deal really. I just wanted to ask her about last night.”

“What about it?”

“I wanted to know why she stood me up. Doesn’t happen to me very often. I’m curious.”

Nikki didn’t like that at all. “She’s not here.”

“Oh, okay. No big deal. Will she be in later?”

“I thought you came here for me.”

“I did. But I’m a multi-tasker. You gotta be if you work for the Mayor, right? Just thought I’d kill two birds with one stone this morning. No big deal, really.”

He put his hand on hers. “I gotta go. We good?”

“Sure,” she said, pulling her hand away.

Ant was just putting the change in her bag when her phone rang.

It was him.

“Miss me already?” he asked in lieu of saying hello.

She did. “I do,” she said.

“I want to see you again, soon, tonight.”

“I’d like that too. But, listen, that’s not why I called.”

“Why’d you call?”

“Um… did something happen to your restaurant?”

“Yeah. It did. Was it you guys? ”

“Yeah. I’m afraid so.”

“My friends are pissed. They’re scraping the hell out of their hands trying to clean it off.”

“I am so sorry. It was my stupid brother. I don’t know why he’d do something like that.”

“Cause he’s kind of an ass?”
