“Wow. What’d I miss?” Nikki just caught the tail end.

“Nothing,” said Ant, pushing past her and out the door. Continuing on till she was well out of earshot of the restaurant.

When she had put what she felt was enough distance between herself and the others she pulled out her phone and dialed Romeo’s number. It rang three times then went to voicemail.

“Hi. It’s me. Um… Ant. Give me a call when you get this. Bye.”

“Hey,” said Cap, calling to her from inside the counter window. “I need you to go to the bank.” He pushed a stack of twenties toward her. “We need singles and quarters.”

Without a word, Ant scooped up the money and headed on her way. So she didn’t see Patrick coming up the walk two minutes later. But Nikki did. Nikki saw him and rushed right over.

“Hi,” she said excitedly .

“Hey,” he said back.

“You come by to see me?”

“Of course…”

“Last night was great,” she gushed.

“Sure was.” He was cool and aloof, but she didn’t seem to notice.

“We should do it again soon.”

“Sure.”

She furrowed her brow and looked around. “I don’t think we’re open yet, but I can probably get you something.

“Coffee?”

“We have coffee. It’s usually just for the staff. Most everyone who eats here gets a soda. But, I can probably swing a cup. For you… How do you take it?”

“Light and sweet,” he said. “Just like you.”

That made her happy. She walked off towards the coffee machine, all the while thinking that maybe he really does like her. Maybe last night wasn’t so bad after all.

Patrick waited at the counter, looking around and messing with his phone. While he did he overheard Tyler running off at the mouth.

“This is bullshit.”

Tyler was refilling the fryer with fresh oil. It glugged loudly out of the thirty-five pound bottle in a box as he spilled it into the not quite as clean as it should be fryer. “We gotta sit out here all night? For what? Those guys are way too scared to show up.”

“You think?” asked Gary Green Shirt.

“Yeah I think. Just wait. If that ass fries jerk shows up here tonight, or any of his friends, we’ll be ready for them.”

“We will?”

“You bet your ass we will. In fact I hope they do.”

Nikki returned with the coffee.

Patrick gestured toward Tyler. “What happened?”

“I don’t know. Some dumb feud that’s never going to end I think.”

He took a sip.
