“You might be right,” said Patrick giving Cap an inch. “But the reality is, there’s no proof of that. It happened at your place and your people were involved. Witnesses say they only saw your guys.”
“What about surveillance?” asked Cap. “Street cameras.”
“There was none working in the area. You have any cameras at your place?”
“No. Not on the outside. Just over the register.” Then he took a big, deep breath. “Monty’s? Really?”
“It was the only choice left. They came in second and the Mayor doesn’t like the third place winner. Never has. He says the rolls are too gummy.”
Patrick shrugged again, as if his hands were tied. Then he started wrapping things up. “There’s one more thing,” he said.
“What?”
“The Mayor still wants you to be there.”
“Where?”
“At the party.”
“Why?!”
“To make amends.”
“No way! No effin way!

??Yes way,” Patrick countered. “You have to go.”
At that point Nikki broke in. She’d been inching forward. Trying to get closer to Patrick. She knew she probably shouldn’t interrupt them, but she just couldn’t help herself. Finally she said, “I’m going to get a cup of coffee if anyone wants one.”
Cap just ignored her, but Patrick answered. “That would be great. Thanks.”
“Come with me?”
“No,” he said. “I think I’ll stay here.”
She didn’t really want any coffee. She really just wanted to get Patrick alone. But now she was stuck. Dejectedly, she headed down the hall toward the hospital cafeteria.
With Nikki gone and Cap stewing silently in his seat, Patrick made his way over to Ant. She was still off by herself and still looking at her phone. Hoping but not hoping that there would be some kind of message from Romeo every time she looked.
“Hey,” he said, as he came up next to her. “Can we talk?”
“Yeah, sure.” She slipped her phone into her back pocket.
“How’s your brother?”
“I don’t know. Okay, I guess.”
“Can we sit?” He gestured to two nearby chairs.
“Sure.”
Once they were settled Patrick began. “So what’s up?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, why’d you blow me off?”
