“You better go,” Ant said to him.

“Yeah, I guess so. Good luck.”

Patrick walked silently out of the waiting room. Right past Nikki. Without saying a word.

She dropped her coffee in the trash and ran after him.

“Wait,” she said, grabbing his shoulder and turning him around. “Aren’t you even going to talk to me? ”

“Listen, the other night was fun but it was a one time thing.”

“I don’t understand. I thought you liked me.” She was visibly upset, on the verge of tears even. Which was not a usual thing for Nikki. It took a lot to get to her. But the truth was, once you got there, once you dug deep enough past that tough I don’t care about nothing or nobody exterior, Nikki had a soft, chewy center.

Patrick didn’t seem to care. “Listen, you need to tell Ant that guy she’s seeing is no good for her.”

He took out his phone and with a few quick keystrokes sent the pictures to her.

“Those were taken a couple of hours ago. He was out celebrating right after he put your cousin in the hospital.”

Then Patrick left. A moment later Nikki got the text.

“We’re free-ee,” Mrs Cap sang, as she and Tyler walked out into the waiting area. “He’s okay. He’s okay,” she added.

Cap exploded. “Okay?! Okay?! Do you know what you’ve done?” He got up out of his chair, flew across the room and stood over his son.

“I didn’t do anything,” Tyler insisted. “I told you. It wasn’t my fault.”

“Really? Tell me again what happened.”

“Leave him alone,” said Mrs Cap, shielding her only boy.

“Tell me!”

Tyler composed himself. He took a second to get his story straight in his own head. Then he said, “I was waiting outside watching the place like you told me to and these guys came up. Those guys from Monty’s. And they jumped us. Like five of them. They hit me with a cheap shot. A beer bottle to my head. And then when I was down they spray painted my face. I didn’t do anything. I’m telling you. It was all those guys.”

“Who exactly?” pressed Cap.

Tyler didn’t answer. But Nikki did.

“Her boyfriend,” Nikki said, pointing at Ant. “Him and his friends.”

“What boyfriend?” asked Mrs Cap.

“Is this true?”

“I don’t know what she’s talking about,” Ant said, waving Nikki off.

“Yeah you do.”

“You got a boyfriend now? Is that where you were the other night? All night?” Cap asked, shaking his head with disappointment.

It was apparent that Ant didn’t know what to say. So Nikki answered for her. “Yes,” she said. “All of that.”

Ant couldn’t believe Nikki would sell her out like that. “What the hell?”

Nikki didn’t care. She went on, “She was out with that guy. The one from Monty’s. The one who did this to Tyler and the one who was out just a couple of hours ago feeling up another girl.”

“What are you talking about?”
