He pointed up the street. “None of the sidewalks are cleared, and it’s too dangerous to walk in the road. Visibility is poor. I’ll call Dominic at the garage and let him know your car is here and give you guys a lift to your place.”

“I don’t need you to bail me out of this situation. My house isn’t far. We can walk.”

His face darkened. “You’d rather walk through this crap than hitch a ride with me?”

“Yeah. I would.”

“You dislike me that much.” It wasn’t so much a question as a statement.

“I don’t think it’s a secret.” The retort fell from her lips before she could stop them.

They stared at each other for several more moments, Regan’s heart nearly beating out of her chest. And just when she thought he might go away, Wyatt squared his shoulders and walked past her. He opened the rear door of the Civic and poked his head inside. “Hey guys, you want a ride home?”

“What are you doing?” Okay. Her voice was shrill, like, on-the-edge shrill, but he ignored her.

“We’re going to Auntie Regan’s,” Jordan said quietly.

“Who are you?” Harriet asked, stepping outside.

“I’m Wyatt.”

“That’s a weird name,” Harriet replied, face scrunched up as she studied the tall man in front of her.

Wyatt shrugged. “That’s a first, but hey, I like your honesty.”

“I have to go to the bathroom,” Jordan said, inching forward on the seat.

Regan moved in front of Wyatt and fought the urge to elbow him as she did so. She peeked into the car. “Sweetie, you can go behind that snow pile. No one will see you.”

Jordan’s eyes got so big, she thought they’d pop. “Um, I can’t. I have to go number two.”

“Oh.”

“Really bad.”

Face tight, she was silent for a few moments.

“Regan.” Did he have to say her name as if each syllable was soaked in sex? She tugged on her scarf, suddenly feeling more than a little constrained.

“I get that I’m not one of your favorite people, but maybe you can put that aside for the moment. We need to get these kids to your place before the storm gets worse. I’ll call a tow truck and they’ll come by when the can and return your car.”

He was right. Of course, he was right. And now she felt like a complete tool. With no other choice, she nodded. “Okay. You win.”

“I always do.” A half smile clung to his mouth.

“Doesn’t count when someone lets you.”

“Does in my books.”

Regan bit back a retort and chose to ignore him. “Come on, kids.” She got her purse and laptop from the front seat and then ushered the twins over to Wyatt’s truck. Once they were buckled in, she climbed into the passenger side. The truck was warm, but as she reached for her seat belt, she paused.

She gave him directions to her home and clasped her hands in her lap. She was tense and wired, and suddenly, another thought hit her.

“What were you doing driving around town in this weather anyway?” she asked.

“I was looking for you.” He didn’t miss a beat and kept his eyes on the road. Which was a good thing, because if he’d been looking in Regan’s direction, he would have seen her tonsils on account of the fact her mouth hung wide open like a barn door.

“Looking for me.” She was dumbfounded. “Why?”
