?The key went in it and turned to release it.

?I took a deep breath and held it, stood up, and assumed a batter’s stance.

?The door opened a little and a hand reached in to feel for the light switch.

?I saw an opportunity and perhaps a less violent solution than to bludgeon whoever it was. I gave Sheryl the bat and with both hands grabbed the arm and pulled hard.

?The figure of a man fell into the room and made a screech as he came. I slipped past him, slammed the door shut, hit the light switch on, and put my foot to the center of the trespasser’s back.

?“I have a bat!” Sheryl growled, her voice down two registers. “Lie there or I’ll bash in your skull.”

?He put his hands up to protect his head. “Please don’t, please!”

?“Turn over,” I yelled in my own attempt to sound dangerous.

?I removed my foot as the man rolled over onto his back and glared up at us with wild, terrified eyes.

?Jon Kane lay on my floor, more surprised than anything else.

?“You?” he said. “I thought you were in jail.”

?Jon sat at Mark’s table and stirred honey into the tea Mark had made for him.

?Talk about coitus interruptus. We could not catch a break. I kept the bat at arm’s length.

?Jon was talking very fast. “I was on my way home from the conference, but as I entered the lobby of my apartment, the doorman told me someone was waiting for me.”

?“So you came here?” Mark asked.

?“Like last night?” I accused.

?He stared at me in disbelief. “How did you know I was here last night?”

?“Never mind that,” Mark bellowed. “Why did you come here at all?”

?“To protect myself,” he fretted. “When I heard about poor Candy, I was certain I was next.”

?“You believe the killer is after you?” I provoked. “Why?”

?He sipped his tea, then pulled a handkerchief out of his breast pocket and wiped his brow.

?“Because I made a deal with Candy to get copies of Randall’s financial records,” he confessed. “When I found out Randall was dead and then Candy was as well, I decided those records must be the reason.”

?“You hired her?” Mark realized.

?Jon nodded. “Actually, Candy approached me. She asked if I would be interested in some suspicious accounts Randall owned.”

?Now it was my chance. “Where did she get the information?”

?“She told me she had a source,” he said and took another tentative sip of tea. “Someone who had been able to get into Randall’s finances and study them. My guess was Charles.”

?“Do you think Charles Nederlander is capable of murder?” I pursued.

?“Three days ago, no. But Randall, then Candy? He might want to make sure that the road to those records is closed.”
