Chapter Nine

Ryder

Rubbing at my temples for the tenth time, I turn to face Dahlia sitting in the living room with her nose buried in her Kindle.

I’ve been trying to find the words to tell her I’m going to be away tomorrow. It’s time to let Brittany and her family know that I’ve started divorce proceedings. I’m afraid Dahlia won’t be too happy with me going to see my soon to be ex-wife, but there isn’t anything to be done about it. I don’t want to hurt Dahlia, but I can’t let the papers show up at Brittany’s house without warning. And that, I feel, has to be done in person.

“Okay.” Dahlia presses a button on her Kindle and lays it down in her lap. “You’re hovering—why?”

“You know me better than anyone.” With a heavy sigh, I move and sit on the coffee table so I can take her hands into mine.

“Now I’m worried.” Her hands tighten around mine.

“I mentioned before that I need to see Brittany about the divorce . . . I’m going to head over there tomorrow.” I kiss her hands and avoid looking at her face. I don’t want to be the one who gives her pain. “I didn’t know how to tell you that I’d planned on going tomorrow. It’s not the best situation—hell it’s the worst, but this visit is something I have to get out of the way. If I felt right doing this without paying her a visit then I would. That isn’t the way I work though.”

“Shush.”

Dahlia drops her Kindle to the floor and takes hold of my face. “I know you have to go and see her. I’m not worried.” She kisses my nose. “Don’t worry. You go and do what you have to do, and don’t worry about me.” She kisses my lips.

I lay my head in her lap, and let out a sigh of relief when her fingers slide through my cropped hair, making me wish my hair was longer. She calms me, and makes everything worthwhile.

“Are you worried she’ll create more problems for you? Is that why you’re so nervous about this visit?” She bends and kisses the top of my head.

Moving so I can look at her, I take her face in my hands and kiss her plum colored lips. Swiping my tongue over her bottom lip, she shivers, and softly moans.

What is it that every time we’re having a serious conversation we end up aroused?

I pull away with reluctance and offer her a wry smile. “Brittany’s very unpredictable, and has been since the stroke. She suffers badly with epilepsy since then as well. Sometimes I think its frustration. I mean, who wouldn’t be frustrated having life as they know it taken away from them in the way she has?”

Sighing, I admit, “Even though a huge part of me hates her for the lies she told, I can’t help feeling sorry for her. And while I’m being honest, I’ll also admit that it’s one of the reasons why I’ve never pushed for a divorce before. I’ve been living with so much guilt and anger that it never bothered me before. Until I met you, I didn’t realize what I’m missing because of my situation. You made me see that I’ve only been existing, and I want a life . . . with you.” I smile having admitted—in a roundabout way—my true feelings for her.

Dahlia has tears in her eyes and as she tries to blink them away, I lean forward and kiss each one in turn. Tracking an escaped tear down her cheek, I capture it on my tongue.

“The more time I spend with you,” she blushes, “the more I’m beginning to see the difference in our relationship compared to my mom’s. He was a married man, living with his wife and children. You haven’t lived with yours at all. I’m not really the other woman, the home wrecker . . . I’m not.” She pulls her bottom lip between her teeth.

Who is she trying to convince—me or her?

“Dahlia, I’ve never lived with her. We’ve never had a relationship of any kind and our marriage has only ever been in name only so I’d say it’s a hell of a lot different than your mom’s situation. I certainly have never looked at you as being the other woman because you’re my woman . . . and once I’m completely free, I’m going to show you just how much of my woman you are.” I grin. “You’re stuck with me until the end, babe.”

She smiles and climbs onto my lap, wrapping her arms around my neck so she can hold me close as we hug. I find I’m unable to keep my hands still and let them wander up and down her back; touching her ass to pull her closer, massaging her shoulders before moving my hands up into her hair. I run my nose along her neck, her jaw and press a tender kiss to her lips.

While trying to get the lustful thoughts out of my head, I realize I want to take her away for a few days. Somewhere, where there is only the two of us—away from here—away from everything that’s going on. Somewhere we can have a few normal days together as a couple.

With that thought, I ask, “Will you come away with me for a few days?”

Her eyes widen in surprise. “Seriously?” A smile starts to spread across her face.

“Yes,” I kiss her lips, grinning, “I’m serious. I want you to myself for a few days . . . so what do you say?”

She sits back in my arms with the smile still on her face, but it falters slightly as she begins chewing on her bottom lip.

I slide my finger along her lips and pull her lip free before rubbing the teeth marks away. Leaning in, I capture it between mine to soothe the tortured lip.

With her lip being sucked between mine, she starts to caress along my top lip with her tongue, causing my dick to throb.

“Yes,” she breathes into my mouth before sealing our mouths together.

Her taste goes straight into my blood, arousing me in ways I’ve never experienced before. She wiggles closer and starts rubbing against me.
