Bree walks over to sit beside me on the bed in just her robe, “I’m curious now.”

“I bought you this present a month ago.” Handing the small box to Bree with a slight shake to my hands, she takes it and removing the bow opens the lid to find a small gold heart on a delicate chain.

Picking the heart up, Bree notices the engraving on the back. She lifts it closer, ‘You’re my Heart, GS’.

Seeing Bree’s eyes flood with tears, I take hold of her face and using my thumbs, wipe them away. “Oh, Gabe.”

“I take it you like it then?”

Laughing and crying at the same time, “I love it and will treasure it always.” Turning her back to me, “Will you put it on me please?”

“My pleasure.” Fastening the chain around Bree’s neck, I bend down placing a kiss to her neck while I smooth the necklace around her.

Standing up and moving from the bed, Bree quickly and silently pulls her black jeans on along with the black and red chiffon.

I just sit on the bed watching her, hoping she’s okay. I can’t remember the last time she was so quiet. I watch her move to the tall set of draws, where she opens the top one and takes out a Christmas wrapped package.

Noticing I have her full attention, I sit up straighter on the bed; she starts walking towards me, sitting down beside me. Taking my hand she links our fingers together and with a slight smile, she tells me, “I bought you this, eleven months ago.”

Rather nervously, Bree passes the gift to me. My hands are about as steady as Bree’s.

Opening the package slowly, I find a watch inside. Stunned, I just look at it as Bree takes it out of my hands and removes the watch from the box.

Opening the fastener on the watch, she holds it up to me. Realizing she’s had it engraved the same as I had her gift. I try to focus, ‘GS, I love you now and always, BK’.

“I was too much of a coward to tell you myself in case you rejected me, so I had it engraved and planned to give it to you on Christmas Eve…. I certainly wasn’t expecting Christmas to turn out quiet like it has.” Smiling up to me, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“Neither would I, babe.” I let Bree fasten the watch onto my wrist, “I love this gift Bree. Thank you.”

“Bree, Gabe, get downstairs now or do I need to come up there with my shot gun?”

Opening the bedroom door, “We’re on our way Dad.”

Her Dad shouts back on a chuckle. “I thought that would hurry you up.”

Chapter 25

BREE

I’m walking downstairs ahead of Gabe, “Dad you’re not threatening my fiancé are you?”

He laughs and heads back into the lounge where everyone’s waiting for us, “Wouldn’t dream of it honey. Come here.” Walking into my Dad’s arms I say, “Happy Christmas.”

“Happy Christmas honey, go and sit with Gabe.” Raising my eyebrow, “I’m playing Santa this year.”

Groaning, I go and sit in Gabe’s lap. He pulls me back against his chest snuggling with his face into my neck.

Watching Dad sort the presents out, I can’t help but laugh at him as he’s probably wishing he’d done this last night while he had more room to maneuver.

Travis bringing a very happy looking Sarah with him sits beside us, pulling Sarah on to his lap, “Happy Christmas sis, Gabe.”

As I’m about to reply, I catch something sparkling on Sarah finger which wasn’t there last night.

They’re engaged! I jump up off Gabe and scream, “Oh my God.” Taking hold of Sarah’s left hand, I hold it up for closer inspection as everyone else starts to realize what’s happening and shout congratulations in Travis and Sarah’s direction, “I can’t believe you just sat down and didn’t say anything.”

Travis looks slightly sheepish, “We didn’t want to take anything away from you.” My face starts to fall. Travis is my brother and no way does his happiness come after mine. Seeing my expression, “You and Gabe have been a long time in the making. You deserved to have today.”

I go to hug him, “I love you Travis and your engagement is just as important as mine. Don’t ever think otherwise…. I would’ve been seriously pissed if I discovered this later or tomorrow.”
