He looked down at his four-year-old identical triplet daughters, Lizzie, Jessica and Kate, and saw them stretching their arms wide like their mother, china-blue eyes pleading for Daddy to pick them up and give them a hug. He did so with an enthusiasm that made them giggle, then he picked up Harriet and spun her around, making her coat swirl out like a cape.
‘Hello, Mrs Fox. Did I ever tell you how much trouble I went through to get you?’ he murmured against her mouth.
‘Frequently!’ she laughed, her sunny eyes warm and unshado
wed, her softly tinted blonde hair brushing against his face as she returned his kiss. ‘Have I been worth it?’
He looked from her to the triplets, to Nicola, and back to Harriet again.
‘Every single grey hair.’
She laughed again, and stroked the midnight-dark head, now liberally streaked with silver. ‘That’s good. Because…remember the office New Year’s Eve party last year?’
‘Vividly,’ he said with a sultry smile. ‘What—?’ He stopped as he saw her impish look, and she was enchanted to see him flush with pride and pleasure. ‘You’re pregnant again?’
She nodded. ‘Susan’s ordered me to have a boy this time.’
‘Or three,’ he added wryly, and hugged her to his overflowing heart.
And Harriet closed her eyes, revelling in the knowledge that the circle of love they had created together would only strengthen and grow more precious with the years…
