Lucifer kneels down, pulls the gun away from me. "At the end of this, we will exist outside of time. Forever," he says.

Tears fall from my eyes, gently landing onto the carpet below.

He sighs. "First, I need you to lead the people out of destruction. Help me rebuild this troubled world."

“There is no point," I say.

His lips scrunch and twist distastefully. "I can arrange for your quick and painless demise, if that's truly what you want."

I nod and give up. Everything that has been shown to me seems like it was taken from some meandering and nauseating dream.

"I feel weak," I say.

"Together, we have more strength than you can imagine," he says, tongue hissing like a snake.

I was never meant to fly through the heavens and wield great power. Instead, I was meant to crawl amongst the filth, to go mad with visions until I'm forced to tear this world apart.

Odin was wrong. Loki, Heimdall, and Raven were wrong.

I was wrong.

Just another crazy person living under a bridge.

And I can't take it anymore.

In this moment of great perilous discovery, I say the unthinkable.

"Okay," I say. "I'll do it."

A thin smile curls against the fat of his cheek. He lowers his hand, and I take it. "Come with me," he says. "There's something marvelous I'd like to show you."

Ash

A tidal breeze softly caresses my face. So tender is the sight of the ocean that I momentarily forget how much I have lost. For one single second, I am back in her arms. I am stuck in that Honda Civic again, holding her hand as the sun adds to her stunning beauty.

Once again, those moments are stolen from me as Lucifer speaks.

"The angels are noble warriors from the ancient periods of this universe. They have watched over earth for millions of years, praying humanity into existence," he says.

Two out of four statues have been placed in the sand, near the tide. It's hard to believe he has found them, but there is still two missing.

One is alive, but it is nowhere to be found.

"You can't control them. As soon as they wake, they will fight you to the death," I say.

He holds the gemstones in his hands. As he walks closer to the statues, the light from inside them grows. Cracks form at the base of the angels. "I hold the power of the gemstones. They will answer only to me."

His attention is focused on the bright light that pours out of them. He closes his eyes and whispers a prayer. "Oh, gods. Feel this, our noble element of fire in nature, love in spirit. Eternal life has no spring, no axle, and no end."

I walk forward and tremble as the angels' outer shell starts to chip away. The wind around us starts to whip violently.

"I have blessed nonentity with every curse, and spiced with sorrow the dull soul of sense. I have breathed life into the sterile universe, as love and knowledge drove out innocence. Oh, gods. Now comes the great reckoning in which you have planned generation after generation for. The key of joy is disobedience."

Before he can awaken the angels, two figures appear from the boardwalk. One blows a ram's horn. The other wields a great sword.

"No way," I whisper. "It's Heimdall and Loki."

Lucifer spins. In a fit of rage, he drops the gemstones. "It can't be."
