"Burn the past. Move forward," she says.

I shift back a little and look at that photograph of my brother. I am alpha, but it’s still so hard to let go of what I saw. Burn all of my memories?

"If I do, will it make your conscience feel better?" I ask.

She sighs. "Ax, there's nothing I can do or say to right the wrongs of the past, but for our sake, we need to move on," she says. “Both of us. My past included.”

"Maybe you're right." I glance at the old photographs. None of them bring me any solace. They are just moments of tragedy.

"There are two things we need to do," she says. "Number one, we make an oath to get to a habitable planet. Two, we free the women in that facility."

She's right. These are memories I need to leave behind. Revenge has gotten me nowhere. I can never change what happened to my people, but I can make sure those women get a chance at freedom.

I spray the lighter fluid across the photographs. I light the torch and watch as the flames rise near my face. The photographs bend and crest, eventually dissolving into a small pile of embers.

She grabs a handful of dust and slowly lets it fall over the flames. I do the same until it goes out.

The skullcap mountains loom in the distance. Over their rocks is the Red Sands, the inhospitable desert of traitors. At least we'll never have to go there.

"Do you feel better?" she asks.

I don't know what I feel but I'm so attracted to her I would do anything to have a real life with her.

The morning light hits the edge of the cave and I'm forced to look above the horizon where the moon once sat. There are other worlds waiting for us. It's just a matter of getting there.

I swing her into my arms and carry her inside. Out of my arms, she drops back on the mattress, begging for another fuck before the afternoon sets in.

I stroke my cock and tease her pussy with a gentle slap, but we're interrupted by an abrupt and violent noise. On my desk, the lights to her communications device flicker. Finally, a single red light flashes in the corner.

She coughs. "My radio."

It rings, louder than expected. "You turned it on?" I ask.

Slowly, she nods.

A rush of panic fills me.

"Yes, but only because I wanted to help us. We needed to find a path off of this planet, and I knew you wouldn’t listen," she says.

I can't even focus. Her insolence knows no bounds.

I swallow and feel anger rise in my chest. I can't trust her. Humans are incapable of honesty. "Did you call her?"

She grabs my ankles and pleads. "One message, but it was to her direct line. No one else will hear it."

"Such naivety," I growl.

I punch my worktable. The radio drops and rolls across the floor. My tools go flying. I pick up the thermal suit and throw it against the wall. It lights up briefly with electric sparks before its energy source dies.

"You betrayed me. You sent them to us. You will kill our child," I bark.

In tears, she backs into a corner. The light on her comms device doesn't stop blinking.

"I wanted to fix this," she whispers, trembling.

"You have ruined everything," I whisper.

I look away from her. I'm not disappointed. I'm heartbroken. In less than twenty-four hours, the military will surround us. They will extinguish our love, and they will take her from me, torturing my heart.
