But no one has been more sentimental over us staying in Mistpoint Harbor than Brian. My dad (getting more used to that) shed more than one tear. “You’re lying to me,” he said repeatedly until he finally believed the news and gave me the biggest bear hug.

Parry was ecstatic when I said I was sticking around, but I made a joke about how I’m not ready to call him a stepdad.

He groaned, “Stop now, Zo.”

Brian was laughing in the background. Partially from seeing Parry in distress. They started bickering after that.

Cutting ties with Brian, Parry, and Colt again would’ve been devastating. Seeing them all at the Pelican makes me happy. Even Colt leaves the lighthouse more than he used to.

Possibly because Babette hangs around our family bar more often, too.

At the Harbor Inn, I shut the door behind me and October, and I smooth out my black dress that flies up with the wind. “Shit.”

October tugs my dress down for me.

I blush. “Thanks.”

I fix the strap of her purse that slips off her shoulder.

She tucks a flyaway hair behind my ear. Then I thumb her tiny smudge of red lipstick I caused from kissing her.

When we finish, October smiles, “We’re all good to go.”

I nod, and hand-in-hand, we steal loving glances and walk towards the Pelican. Towards the lake. Where we’ll grab a bottle of wine and sit on a picnic table. Staring out at the sparkling sun over the water. Just like we did one month ago. Just like we promised we’d do every month on the day.

To remember the happiest moment of our lives. Where October and I chose each other. Where we continue to choose each other.

And whatever fate has in store, we write our own legends now.
