“You’re telling me.”

“Shit. Does this mean he told Cage and the others?”

She shakes her head. “He promised me he didn’t. He made up some stupid story about Lamone hitting on you and me.”

“Why would the guys care about that?”

“Hell if I know. I’ve been trying to talk him out of it.”

Brock Steel shows up then, his addictive smile splitting his handsome face. “Why are the two most beautiful ladies at the party hiding back here?”

“I don’t know. Why don’t you ask them?” I smirk.

“I think I just did, Callie.”

I roll my eyes. “We’re not buying your lines, Brock.”

“Maybe you aren’t. I know you’ve got it bad for Donny.” He turns to Rory. “You, on the other hand…”

“Just got out of a major relationship,” I say. “Leave Rory alone.”

Rory drops her jaw open. Though I expect her to agree with me, she says, “I can speak for myself, Cal.”

What? Perhaps Rory doesn’t realize her comment just invited Brock Steel to inundate her with come-ons. Has she totally forgotten how men are? Especially the Rake-a-teers?

“In fact,” Brock says, “Donny is looking for you, Callie. I told him I’d try to find you.”

“You found me. I’ll just text him and tell him where we are.”

“He’s up on the deck with Uncle Talon.”

“I know that. He’s hanging with his dad, and I totally understand.”

“All I know is he was wondering where you are.”

“Like I said, I’ll text him.”

Rory meets my gaze. “It’s okay. Go ahead. I’m fine here.”

Fine? With a Rake-a-teer? Who’s clearly interested?

“Ror…”

“I’m good. Go ahead.”

“Okay. If you say so.” I walk back out into the crowd and toward the deck where Donny’s still sitting with Talon.

And I hope my sister knows what she’s doing.

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

DONNY

My phone buzzes. Hmm. I don’t recognize the number, so I ignore it and shove it back into my pocket.

Callie approaches us then. “Hey. Brock says you were looking for me.”

“I am.” I smile.
