She smiles. My God, she’s beautiful.

“Can you call him back?”

“Better yet. I’ll go see him in person.”

“Do you know where he lives?”

“Easy enough to find out.” I lean down and give her a searing kiss on her lips. “You’re fucking brilliant.”

“So are you. I think between the two of us, we can take him down.”

“I know we can.”

“I have to get to court, baby.” I give her another quick kiss. “I’ll visit Pat this afternoon.”

She nods.

Pat Lamone is nothing. Him, I can handle.

It’s the secrets of my own family that have my skin crawling.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

CALLIE

My nerves jump a little. Not that I think Pat Lamone can make charges against me stick. I did spill the coffee on him, but it was a total accident. He’s just trying to get under my skin.

I can’t let him.

I sit back down at my cubicle and then jerk at the sound of my name.

“Hey, Callie.”

I look up. Brock Steel stands in front of me.

As tall as Donny but the opposite to him in looks. Dark where Donny is light but nearly as good-looking. Tall and muscular and an imposing presence.

“Brock, what are you doing here?”

“I need to talk to Donny. Is he in?”

“He’s in court. Didn’t they tell you downstairs?”

“There wasn’t anyone at reception, and Alyssa isn’t at her desk either.”

I stand and take a quick look around the office. “That’s strange. Anyway, I think he said he only has a couple of tickets to do this morning. He shouldn’t be too long.”

“Good, I’ll wait. It’ll give us a chance to talk.”

“I’m kind of in the middle of working. Do you want to just wait in Donny’s office?”

“When I have a lovely woman out here to talk to? I don’t think so.”

“Okay. But like I said, I’m—”

“Working. Yeah, I know. How’s your sister doing?”

“Rory or Maddie?”
