MY DICK ISN’T CLINGY, IT HANGS.

NATHAN

We made it to Nana’s undetected.

I glanced back at Karina as she climbed off the back and pulled the helmet off her head. I scanned her face. She was still visibly uncertain of what was to come next. Her body trembled and my eyes traveled down—right. She was in just a shirt. I pulled off the jacket of my suit and hopped off the bike. Moving behind her, I covered her shoulders with it.

“Where are we?” She glanced over her shoulder. Giving her a small smile, I looked over at the house in front of us. The door swung open. My grandmother stepped out, peering in the dark.

“Nana’s.” I replied, placing my arm around Karina's shoulder and leading her up the steps to the wooden porch.

“Nathan James Rainer... what are you—is that blood?” Nana reached for my shirt, but I took her hand gently. Her watery gaze drifted over me, eyebrows drawn together as she checked for any visible wounds.

“Don’t worry, Nana.” Giving it a small squeeze, I reassured her I was all right.

Her eyes shifted to Karina. She blinked twice, taking in her appearance. “Dear, you must be cold. He made you come out at this time of night in nothing?”

Nana’s eyes flickered back to me as she snatched her hand from mine. “Have I not taught you anything?”

Karina’s snicker caught my attention, but I kept my eyes on Nana. “We were in a rush. A bit of danger. I didn’t know where else to go.”

“For the night,” Nana insisted, lifting a finger up in warning. “I know how you get about staying here for too long.”

She reached over, sliding her arm over Karina’s shoulder, and pushed mine away. That Nana for you, always the caretaker. I shook my head. Looking over at my bike, I knew it had to be stowed away somewhere.

“Nathan?” I glanced back at the door, seeing Karina standing there with Nana. “You’re not leaving, are you?”

I shook my head. “No, just going to hide the bike in the garage. I’ll be inside in a few. Go get warmed up.” I gave her a small smile. She nodded in return, turning back around, and followed Nana into the house.

Taking a deep breath, I headed down the steps and walked back to my bike. Pushing it over to the garage, I parked it for a moment inches away. I reached down, grasping the handle in my gloved hands, and pulled up, opening the garage door.

Turning at the sound of footsteps, I noticed Sebastien, the kid my grandmother adopted years ago. A sigh of relief escaped my lips. “It’s only you.”

“Yeah, because I live here.” Sebastien tilted his head. His eyes examined me before he crossed his arms. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

“Hiding out for the night. Shouldn’t you be inside? It’s late.”

“I’m not a kid.” He rolled his eyes, walking over to the motorcycle. He pushed it into the garage for me. “Guess I’m not the only one looking for trouble.”

“There’s a difference. My job is troublesome. You’re just an idiot.” I smirked.

He narrowed his eyes. “You’re lucky this is Cole’s bike. If it were yours, I’d run it into the creek down the road.”

I shrugged. “Nana’s busy inside. She won’t know you came home late.”

Sebastien scoffed. “Nana knows everything.”

He wasn’t wrong. It was like she could tell the future sometimes. A damn psychic, of sorts. “You’re right.”

I glanced over at him. His hair ruffled in a mess, a black rim around his eye, and his hands bandaged. “You need to find a new hobby.” I shook my head. “One that won’t kill you.”

“And you need to find a new job that won’t put us at risk.”

“Touché.” I chuckled.

“Are you staying downstairs with Nana or upstairs?”

That was a good question. Before upstairs belonged to Cole and his girlfriend, but since Cole’s disappearance, the rat in front of me occupied the place. “Depends. I might just crash on the couch since the downstairs guest room is taken.”

“Oh, you brought work with you?” He asked with a smug grin. “That’s not like you at all. What have you done to my dick of a nephew?”

“Haha, funny. Just because my grandmother adopted you doesn’t make you my uncle.” I let out a breath. “But yeah, I brought work with me and I’d rather not sleep in the same room.”

“What’s so bad about sleeping on the floor?”

“She won’t let me.”

“Nana?” He asked.

“No, Karina.”

“Who the fuck is Karina?”

“My boss’s daughter.”

Sebastien raised an eyebrow at me. “So, you’re fucking your boss’s daughter.”

I started to shake my head but then stopped because… well, that’s exactly what I had done. I was fucked. Literally. In more ways than just physical. Not only did I disobey my boss’s wishes, but I also had sex with his daughter and got us all in fucking trouble.

“Would I have sex with her if she wanted to? Yes. Would I have sex with her because I wanted to? No.”

“So that’s a yes, you did.” Sebastien chuckled. “Such a sad moment to see Nathan James Rainer in the palm of some girl’s hand.”

“Laugh it up. I guarantee it’ll happen to you.”

“Yeah, fall flat on my ass for a girl, sure.” He chuckled, shaking his head. As we walked out of the garage, Sebastien tried to walk past me. Before he could get ahead, I pulled him by the shoulders so we were beside one another. Sebastien tried to push me away, but I kept a tight grip.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been home.”

“Yeah, doesn’t mean you need to be a clingy dick.”

“My dick isn’t clingy, it hangs.”

Sebastien looked at me and shook his head. “Why, just why?”

I laughed and dragged him to the front of the house. Pushing him inside, I walked in behind him. “Go put some ice on those hands. And anti-bacterial cream.”

“I just pour alcohol over them.”

Suddenly, a voice called out. “Sebastien, is that you?” Nana called from the kitchen. He gave me a look, fear twinkling in his eye. He tried to turn and leave, but I stood in his way.

“Yeah Nana, it’s him.” I called out, smirking a little.

“Asshole,” Sebastien muttered.

I laughed and pushed him into the living room. The air smelled like cinnamon, as it always did. I moved from behind him and threw myself onto the couch before slipping my shoes off and placing my feet on top of the coffee table, just to be swatted off by Nana as she walked by.

“Go check on Karina.” Nana said as she tossed a set of clothes on the coffee table where my feet had been. “But change your clothes first.”

“Weren’t you just with her?” I asked, unbuttoning my shirt.

“Yes, but she is your responsibility.” She shooed me, turning her attention to Sebastian as she wrapped her delicate arms around him, dragging him into the bathroom.

I rolled my eyes. I swear she always favored Sebastien. But to be fair, he needed the attention. I slid off the button-up shirt, stained with red spots, and placed it on the table. Looking down at myself, I noticed that blood also stained my undershirt. I pulled that off too, my pants following.

In nothing but my boxers, I picked up the clothes Nana gave me, noticing it was only a pair of shorts. I put them on and looked back towards the room Karina was in. Did I honestly want to see Karina? No, did I have to? Unfortunately. Not because Nana said so, though.

Dragging my feet, I made my way over to the back room, knocking lightly on the door. “Karina?”

The door cracked open, revealing the brunette that laid behind it. Her eyes drifted up to mine. Her red eyes were puffy and tear stains ran down the length of her cheek. I placed my hand on the door, pushing it open.

Karina needed me.

She took a step back as I walked in, closing the door behind me. Breaking the distance between us, I wrapped my arms around her. Her hands found their way to my back. Her breath brushed against me as she held me close.

“You don’t have to be worried. I got you.” I whispered into her hair.

You’ll always have me, I wanted to add, but didn’t.

She let out a deep, sad sigh. “I almost thought you left me.” She whispered.

A soft chuckle left my lips. “I promise, I couldn’t leave you even if I wanted to.”

Keeping her in my arms, I moved us both back towards the bed. “Because my father would kill you if you did.” She mumbled.

I chuckled. “Correction, he’d hire someone to kill me.” Not that he’d have a reason to do so. Leaving her wasn’t something I wanted to do. She had such a hold on me, and I wasn’t ever ready to let go. Two fucking months and she trapped me in her web. I wasn’t falling for her, but there was a good chance I could one day. Did that scare the living hell out of me? No.

What did scare me was the idea of possibly losing her. Friendship or more than that... she was a Vasiliev; a target was planted on her back from the start and assignment or not, I would protect her with my life.

Her body shook in my arms as she laughed. “Yeah, he doesn’t like getting his hands dirty.”

“And you do?”

“Depends on what it’s for.” She peeked her head up, her eyes locking with mine. As bad as it sounded, I knew she didn’t mean it that way.

“You mean like styling clothes?” I smiled down at her.

“You noticed?”

I took her hand and lifted it. Little puncture wounds dotted the tips of her fingers. “It’s hard not to notice when you dressed your friends in front of me when we were in New York that weekend.”

She smiled, “It’s fun. I did it when I was in California too. My grandmother got me into it.”

“All my nana taught me was that I could get my ass beat as an adult.” I grinned, letting her hand slip from mine. “I’m glad to see you smiling.”

She looked down at her feet. “You know... I’ve been wondering something.”

“What’s that?” I asked her.

“Why are you still single? From what I’ve seen, I think anyone would swoon over you.”

“Anyone?” I raised an eyebrow at her. “Does that include you?” A part of me really hoped.

“No, I’m not emotionally affected by you, just physically.”

“Oh, so I get your panties in a bunch.” I chuckled.

“All bunched, hot, and bothered.” She was teasing, joking. Though we both knew there was a truth to it. I scanned her face; no sign of fear. No, she was calm and collected, playful. And that’s what I liked to see. Since when? I wasn’t sure, but I did.

“Nathan?” she asked, barely a whisper.

I blinked twice, tilting my head. “Yeah, Karina?”

“I know you don’t want to tell me the reason, but for what it’s worth, I hope you find someone worthy of what you can offer.”

Shaking my head, I glanced down at her hands. “I’m single by choice. If I end up with someone, they’ll only be in danger.”

“So you don’t date to keep people safe. What about being interested in anyone?”

Since working for Mr. Vasiliev, I never really got close to a woman until her. And before that, I wasn’t one to commit, which was why I never settled into an actual relationship. “If you want to know if I’m interested in you, I can just tell you.”

Karina shook her head. “I know you are,” she told me, meeting my gaze.

“Someone’s cocky.” I smirked. “Who says I don’t just want to be friends?”

Her hand slithered up my arm, planting a trail to haunt me along the way. “With the way you’ve touched me, I don’t think you do.”

My skin tingled with each breath Karina took against my chest. I reached over and lowered her hand from my arm. “You’re right,” I said, “but I also have no intention of leading you on and making you think things might go somewhere from here.”

“I don’t mind if we just have fun if we keep it between us two.”

It was a tempting offer, but after what happened, I was sure she was just emotional and not thinking clearly. She more than likely wanted to distract herself, but I couldn’t do that for her yet, not when I needed to stay focused. “How about we talk about this another time? Maybe after we get back?”

Karina searched my face. Her eyes filled with disappointment. She pulled away from me, climbing into bed and under the covers. She turned her back to me. “Sure, we can wait.”

From the sound of her voice, I could already tell I fucked up and would pay for it… big time.
