“Jax trusts me. He knows I wouldn’t cheat on him.”

Now Daniel frowned. “Have dinner with me.”

“You know I’m not going to do that.”

He held up a hand. “Not…as an ex-lover but as a friend. I’m not trying to get back with you. I just…”

“What, Daniel? What are you trying to do? You and Jax aren’t friends anymore, and that breaks my heart.”

“I lov—” He cut himself off and sighed looking away. “I want my old friends back. I have no one anymore. You know how my parents are, and the divorce with Alise was finalized a couple weeks ago. For a little while we tried to make it work, but every time I looked at her, I saw you.”

“Daniel, don’t.”

He fell silent. Her heart wrung for him. Not because she still loved him, but because he didn’t deserve this. If she hadn’t hooked up with his best friend, at least he’d have Jax by his side. “Why don’t you come to dinner tomorrow night? If you concentrate on rebuilding your friendship with Jax, everything will work out between you.”

He looked so hopeful. Tae knew she’d made the right decision.

“Tomorrow at six thirty, okay?”

He nodded. “Thanks, Tae.”

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

She pointed a finger at him. “Come correct. That’s all I’m saying.”

“I will. See you tomorrow.”

Tae watched him walk away and wondered how she’d break the news of their guest to her fiancé. Well, maybe he’d be more inclined to forgive his friend after tonight’s activities. She grinned in anticipation as she slid behind the wheel of her car and headed home.

Chapter Sixteen

Tae stepped out of the shower, wrapped a towel around her, and ran on tiptoe to her ringing cell phone. She’d just missed Jax’s call. Before she could call him back, his text came in.

“Stopping at Walgreen’s. Be there shortly. Need anything?”

She chewed her lip, thinking about it. If she said condoms, he’d know what she had planned, but she wasn’t on the pill because it made her sick. She opened the top drawer of his dresser and rummaged around. As luck would have it, he had three in there.

“Just a bottle of sweet tea if you don’t mind. You know the flavor I like.”

“Breastfeeding mommy.”

She grumbled. “I can have one or two cups a day, Daddy!”

“Lol.”

She rolled her eyes at the phone and dropped it on the nightstand. After moisturizing her skin with a gold glitter lotion, she slipped into a purple lace chemise. The underwire black lamé cups would support her boobs while still looking supersexy, and the lamé lace-up front hid the problem area of her belly. She tried on sheer thigh-high stockings with garters, but the elastic pressed too much into her thick thighs and looked like they were choking off circulation. She discarded them and opted for just a strip of cloth that constituted panties. Six-inch clear platform sandals completed her outfit. Jax’s horny ass would love it, she was sure.

As she waited for her fiancé, Tae wandered from the living room to the kitchen to the bedroom. Jax’s house as he said was small, but it was cute with three bedrooms and in a quiet Concord neighborhood. All she’d needed to know was that it was a short drive to Concord Mills Mall. She loved it on sight and felt that it would do very well for their little family.

When she picked up the sound of Jax’s car in the driveway, she ran to the couch and sat down, then jumped to her feet and almost fell on her face in the high heels. She pressed a hand to her chest. “Calm down, idiot. You are not brand new.”

She took a deep breath and then struck a pose beside the couch, feeling like an amazon in the heels. Jax stuck his key in the door, turned the lock, and strode in. The two bags in his hand slid to the floor with a thunk.

“I hope you didn’t break my bottle of tea,” she said.

He stared at her, his mouth agape, eyes like they’d pop out of his head. Then he realized he held the door open, scooped up the bags and hurried in to slam the door. “Tae, what are you wearing?”
