Padding down the stairs, I made my way to Silas, wincing as he walked awkwardly on his bad leg. Holding his hand out to me, I only hesitated a moment before sliding my fingers into his, and the joy that infused me from just that small contact was immeasurable.

I guessed he felt the same, judging by the soft squeeze he gave my hand before turning back to Duke.

“I left the other one knocked out behind the building.”

“What other one?” Duke asked.

“The mouthy one.”

“Spaz?” I cut in, and Duke let out a low chuckle.

“Yeah, I suppose he really is, isn’t he?” Shaking his head, he added, “Show me where and I’ll deal with him.”

Silas led us around the back of the Ranger Station, his pace increasing as he got used to the pain in his leg, but he stopped short when we rounded the corner.

Because there was nothing there except the wind.
