The next thing is to make damn sure Frost stays alive too.

I bury my face in his pale, satin hair and hold him tightly as the cold night rushes around us.

After what feels like an agonizingly long time, Kian slows, and then comes to a halt. I lift my head somewhat woozily and glance around to find we’re in a deep thicket of trees. Even the moon can’t filter through the thick canopy here.

Malix appears at my side, holding out his arms. “Come on, kitty. We’re safe.”

I release Kian’s fur somewhat painfully and a fistful of fur comes with me. My fingers have cramped up from the death grip I had on him. Sliding my arm from beneath Frost’s body, I reach for Malix and let him help me off Kian’s back.

“You’re hurt,” he murmurs, worry gleaming in his violet eyes.

“Nothing too bad. Frost first,” I reply, swallowing hard as I brush off his concern.

In Malix’s arms, the beautiful blond shifter looks limp and pale. Malix heaves the unconscious man from Kian’s back and then lays him gently on the grass while Kian shifts to human form.

I fall to my knees beside Frost, fear filling me with a chill even worse than the night around us.

Pressing two fingers to his neck, I search for his pulse.

But I can’t find one.

I fall forward, pressing my ear to his chest then moving up to his nose, begging for there to be some breath of life in him.

But there’s nothing.

No heartbeat.

No breathing.

Nothing.

My heart cracks wide open.
