“It’s not just the bad ones,” I say. “It’s everything. All mixed up together.” I suck in a lungful of air and let it out slowly.

“Maybe we just need a fresh start,” he says. “A clean slate. Pretend we really are strangers.”

I let out a small laugh. “Wave a magic wand? We could probably do that. Or you could. I’m so out of practice I’d probably just set something on fire.”

Blake chuckles, then adds, “I notice you didn’t bind your magic yet.”

“Nessa refused, given the circumstances.” I frown. “She says I may need them, with the Night Guild after us and all.”

My words turn the mood inside the van on a dime. An unpleasant reminder that I’m still being hunted by one of the most dangerous supernatural crime organizations in the world.

“If they think we’re going down without a fight, they’re in for a nasty surprise,” Blake snarls. “The Blackstock Clan, along with all the other clans of warlocks and witches in the Highlands? That’s a war they can’t win.”

I shiver. Blake hasn’t seen what I’ve seen. The fortress in the jungle. The dozens of comatose bodies in the subterranean hospital, humans and supernaturals that the Night Guild abducted and turned into vegetables so they could turn a profit. And Darkness herself.

“I hope it doesn’t come to that,” I say. “I don’t want anyone putting themselves in harm’s way for me.”

“You are a Highlander, Tamsin MacPherson, whether you want it or not.” Blake’s voice is sharp as a sword. “It’s in your blood, and we defend our blood. It’s as simple as that.”

His expression is fierce enough to make any sane person pale in the face of it, and his eyes flash wolf for a moment. I feel a flare of heat through my body, and my nipples harden. It’s all I can do to keep my eyes on the road and not on the sexy warlock next to me.

I’m what most would consider a reserved person. Calm. Collected. In control. Part of it’s my line of work, and part of it’s from striking out on my own at such a young age. It’s always been me, ever since my parents died. Me alone, facing the world.

But Blake reminds me what it feels like to have a family. And more than that, he awakens that wild, carefree girl buried deep within me. A part of me I’d forgotten even existed. It’s scary, and I’m not sure how to feel about it, other than knowing I cannot give in, no matter my history with Blake. No matter how incredibly strong my feelings are. I’ve built another life, far, far away from here. A good life.

I can’t just abandon that. Can I?
