I reach up and try to wipe away my tears. “Thank you,” I say, my voice a bit steadier.

“Of course,” Erik says.

He reaches up and runs a hand down my upper arm as if warming me up, even though we’re standing in front of the fire, just a comfort gesture. Then, with his other hand, he reaches up and gently brushes his thumb across my cheek. “You missed one,” he says, and his voice has gone several octaves lower, like smoke and velvet.

“I’ve never trusted anyone since Lilli was born,” I say softly. “But I trust you. And I just met you. It’s… strange.”

Erik’s green eyes glow golden in the light from the flames, and he takes a step closer to me. “Strange…yes.” He shakes his head.

“I’m glad you’re here. I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me.” I lean in toward Erik. I have to be closer to him, to feel the warmth of his dragon magic against my skin.

“I’m your bodyguard, Astrid,” he says. “It’s my job to stay objective. Neutral. Unattached.” His eyes lock onto mine. “But I can’t seem to do that with you.”

My heart thrums in my chest. I close the last little bit of distance separating me from Erik. Our hips brush together and my fingertips find his, our magic sparking as they meet. “I don’t want to make you break the rules,” I whisper.

“This is definitely breaking the rules,” he says.

His dragon rumbles inside him, and a flash of silver light swirls around us. Erik’s right hand moves across my hip and wraps around the small of my back. He raises his left, and he gently runs his thumb down across my lower lip, soft as a feather. Just that lightest of touches sends a rush of heat through my body which has nothing to do with the fire flickering behind us.

“I’ve never let down my guard with a client before,” he says, his voice a soft growl. A maelstrom of conflicted emotions runs through his eyes. “I shouldn’t even be here right now.”

I reach up and place one hand on his chest, feeling the racing of his heart beneath my fingers. My eyes meet his, and my fingers trace along his collarbone. “No doubt you shouldn’t.”

A swirl of silver flame moves across Erik’s eyes, and he pulls me even more tightly against him. He bends down, his lips hovering just a breath away. I drink in the heat from his dragon, and my witch magic joins with his. With a tormented growl, Erik presses his lips to mine.

It’s soft at first, a rush of sweet heat and magic sparking between us. Erik’s tongue tangles against mine, slow and tantalizing. One hand cups the side of my face, brushing my hair back, and the other presses me into him. Our torsos are crushed together, and I can feel the substantial length of him hardening against me. I moan and slide my thigh against his, needing to be even closer.

Erik lets out another growl and lifts me. I wrap both legs around his waist and he steps forward, shoving me against the wall next to the fireplace. I gasp as my back hits the wood, and my sex throbs against him. Erik grabs both of my wrists in one of his hands and traps my arms above my head, then his lips move down the side of my neck, leaving a trail of sparks like fire.

He pulls my sweater down off my shoulder and kisses the top of it, then makes his way back toward my breasts. His lips brush over the tops of them, and I sigh with pleasure. Erik’s cock hardens even more beneath me, and the idea of it entering me is making me lose my mind…

At that moment, the flames in the fireplace go out with a hiss and a rush of darkness sweeps across the room.
