I fly through dark nothingness for several moments, and then I’m abruptly deposited before a huge door. It is wooden, carved with Viking runes that glow a pale green. I don’t want to go through the door because I know if I do, there’s no going back. I try to step away from it, but it begins to open of its own accord.

A brilliant white light pours from the other side, blinding me. I lift an arm to shield my eyes, and when the glow fades, I see a figure standing there waiting for me. A very familiar figure.

Kára.

She smiles and reaches out a hand for me, and I take a step toward her. One toe moves over the threshold of the door. The white light wraps around me, tugging, inviting. I’ve lived such a very long time, over a thousand years. So much longer than most beings. Perhaps longer than I even deserve.

Isn’t it time to rest?

There’s another pulse of light, but this one comes from behind me. I turn, and at first all I see is gold. Like staring into a brilliant sunrise. But then I make out wings, a set of them, attached to a woman. A woman I love with all my heart.

Astrid’s eyes burn gold just like her wings, and she lifts her hand, beckoning me.

I look between the two women, and then I reach out and take Astrid’s hand. Kára smiles, and she bows her head and raises her fingers to her lips in a silent blessing for us. Then she turns, closing the door with the glowing runes behind her. Astrid steps closer to me, folding her wings around us both, and we vanish from the darkness.

The stark light of the hospital room shines in my eyes, and I gasp, drawing in a breath. I look up at Astrid, wonder in my eyes.

“You’re a Valkyrie,” I whisper. “Except you brought me back. That’s never been done before.”

“Shhh,” she says. She’s kneeling by my side, and she helps me sit up. “You came back to me. That’s all that matters.”

“I’ll always come back to you.” I lean forward and kiss her, tasting the fading magic on her lips.

“Mommy is a good angel,” Lilli says from the hospital table.

“Come on,” Astrid says. “We need to get out of here.”

I stand and stride for the table, stepping over Darkness where she lays slumped on the floor. I’ll have to deal with her later. For now, getting Lilli and Astrid out of here is the top priority. I bend down and scoop Lilli into my arms. Astrid wraps her arms around us both, her magic folding around us. And then we vanish, leaving this hospital of horrors behind.
