I arch my brows. “Cryptic much? What the hell are you talking about?” I’m done playing nice with her if she’s going to be an asshole.

She stalks around me on her spiked red heels. Apparently it’s her fashion signature. “I guess I should say who you are. And what you’re doing here.”

A pulse of panic moves through my veins, but I paste a catty smile on my face. “Do enlighten me, Violet.”

A roll of the eyes. “The Raven Society? Trying to crash the big demon summit?”

Fuck. “And what exactly makes you think that?”

She shrugs. “I hear things. Caspian’s staff have big mouths. They said the Raven Society sent a spy, and obviously it’s you.” She pauses in her circling and fixes me with a poisoned-honey smile. “The bigger question is, what will Sebastian do when he finds out?”

My magic lashes out of me without warning, a firestorm sweeping through my body. Flames spark from my fingertips. My demon power wraps around Violet, tugging her toward me. “Here’s a better question: what am I going to do to you if you run around spreading ugly gossip?” I snarl.

Violet’s eyes widen in shock but she recovers almost instantly, shoving against my power with her own. I respond—or rather, the wild, unruly magic raging through me responds—by tightening around her even more. She gasps and shudders as I crush her in a vice grip of flame.

“Do we have an understanding, Violet?” Even my voice sounds different. Lower, darker, and carrying the heat of my flames with it.

She struggles for another moment, but then she nods. I know I can’t trust her, but what’s the alternative? I can’t exactly kill her and hide the body down here in the cellar…

The wild power within me doesn’t want to let go, and for a moment I fight against it. Violet lets out another gasp, and I realize she’s having a hard time breathing. This shocks my senses enough to loosen my grip on her. She takes a step back and stares at me a moment. She hadn’t missed the inner battle I’d just had to regain control of my power.

Good. I hope the bitch is well and truly scared now.

She turns shakily and practically flees from the cellar, and it’s only after she’s gone that the fear hits me.

What is happening to my magic? To me?

I’d come here to put an end to the Night Guild, then move on with my life. But it’s clear I can’t walk away from what I’ve become quite so easily.
