“You’re right, of course,” Sebastian says. “I’ll deal with it.” He swings his eyes back to mine. His expression is blank. Dead.

“Sebastian,” I whisper.

“Be quiet,” he snaps.

He stalks toward me, and when he reaches me, he grabs me by the waist and slings me over his shoulder. I twist in his grasp, but his grip is too tight.

“I knew I could count on you to make the right choice,” Caspian calls.

As Sebastian carries me from the room, I pivot my head for just long enough to see Caspian’s black eyes pinned to mine, a sick smirk on his face.

I have no intention of going to my death quietly. But my instincts tell me to bide my time. If I manage to break free now, I’ll have two powerful demons to contend with. And with my very volatile and newbie demon powers that seem to be overwhelming my witch magic of late, those odds aren’t exactly in my favor.

If I can get Sebastian alone, then maybe I can take him. Maybe.

My heart races as he carries me, the blood rushing to my head from being toted around upside down. I catch flashes of our surroundings, enough to tell that he’s left the hotel and taking me toward his house. No one else appears to be visible in the courtyard as we cross it, at least none I can see with my limited vision.

At the edge of the courtyard, Sebastian calls on his magic and we vanish, reappearing in the foyer of his house. Another little demon trick—witches are fond of that one, too. He carries me through a couple rooms and then abruptly flips me over his shoulder and into a large, overstuffed leather chair. With another flair of power, he wraps several strands of his dark magic around my upper body, binding me in my seat.

My vision takes a moment to clear, and when it does, I see Sebastian pacing back and forth in front of me. He’s graceful like a panther. Deadly like one, too.

He finally stops moving, and his eyes settle on mine. “I’m going to ask you some questions. No more lies, Luciana.”

I lift my chin and stare back at him. I feel strangely calm, considering I’m about to die.

“Why did you come here?” he asks.

No more lies. I can agree with that. If these are my final moments, I’m going out on my terms. “I came here to destroy the Night Guild.”

His gaze flickers and he purses his beautiful lips. He has one finger crossed over them, the rest of his fingers cupping his chin as he watches me. “Why?”

“Come on, Sebastian,” I say softly. “You already know the answer to that.”

He shrugs. “The labs. Turning you into a hybrid.”

A flash of rage moves through me. “So nonchalant? I spared you the gory details before.” I’m so mad my vision goes dark again. I shake my head to clear it. “The part where I was kept in a subterranean cave. The excruciating agony when I turned into a demon. The coma, for nearly a month, where my mind lived in Hell, quite literally. Or the part where dozens of other supernaturals were turned into vegetables, completely brain dead and left to die.” I pause. “Did you know about the blood banks?”

“I’m the one asking the questions, here,” Sebastian says coolly.

I grit my teeth. “Did. You. Know?”

His eyes flicker. “No,” he says softly.

He turns and circles around the chair, disappearing from sight for several moments. I can hear him pacing behind me, the soft fall of his shoes on the marble floors. When he moves back into view, he stops in front of me again.

“Was sleeping with me part of your grand plan?” His jaw flexes, and his eyes burn into mine.

“No,” I say. “I had a job interview lined up, but when I arrived at the resort, they’d already filled the position. I had to improvise. The sex was… a convenient accident.”

Sebastian lets out a bitter laugh. “A convenient accident?”

“Don’t act so shocked,” I say. “A playboy like you? You go through women like you go through bottles of wine, discarding them when you’re done.”

He crosses his arms over his chest. “You know me so well, do you?”

“Am I wrong?” I throw him a challenging look.

Instead of answering, he asks another question. “So, what’s the end game here? A raid, I assume? When is it going down?”
