I nod. “A raid, yes. As for when, I’d planned on tomorrow. I wanted to find out where the other two labs are, so I can stage a rescue.” I shrug. “But I suppose it’ll be tonight instead, because when I don’t check in in the next two hours, my colleagues will come for me.”

Sebastian walks slowly toward me. “And what makes you think you’re going to miss your check-in time?”

I stiffen. “You won’t be able to steal my phone and fake it. It’s a different coded message each time to safeguard against this exact scenario.”

He shakes his head, looking down at his shoes. Then he growls and spins around, lacing his hands behind his head. Magic streams off of him.

When he turns back around, his expression stops my heart. “You really think I’m going to kill you?”

I blink. “You told Caspian you’d take care of it. It meaning me.”

“I told Caspian what he needed to hear so he’d let me walk out of there with you, no arguments.”

Confusion ripples through my chest. “I don’t understand…”

His eyebrows shoot up. “You think Caspian telling me you’re a spy was brand new information?”

“Wait—you knew?”

“I knew the first day you arrived.” He smirks, crossing his arms over his chest.

“So, then… you’ve just been sleeping with me as part of some kind of game?”

“How did you phrase it… a convenient accident?”

My own magic flares out and I struggle against the bonds, rattling the chair against the floor. “And you act like I’m the devious one here. Like I used you.”

“We used each other, Luciana,” Sebastian says, his voice dropping several octaves.

He steps forward, closing the distance between us. He looks down at me for several long moments, then drops to his knees in front of me. His hands slide along the arms of the chair on either side of me.

“So, you were just going to let your Raven Society friends cart me off to some magical prison?” Sebastian’s eyes hold mine so intensely it feels like a magnet, like he’s sucking me into his silver gaze.

I open my mouth but hesitate, biting my lower lip.

“Remember, Luciana,” he whispers. “No more lies.”

“I will do anything to take down the Night Guild,” I say softly. “And you’re not a good guy, Sebastian. You may not have known about the labs, but you must know about many, many other terrible things.” I pause again. “But…”

He leans toward me, his fingers brushing up against my forearms where they’re strapped to the chair. Several strands of his dark hair fall into his face. “But?”

“I felt really conflicted about the idea of you being taken away,” I respond, my heart fluttering in my chest.

“You would have done it anyways, though.”

“I told you.” I take a deep breath. “I’ll do anything to destroy the Guild. No matter how I feel about one particular person.”

“A woman of conviction.” He nods. “I’d think less of you if you made any other choice.”

We stare at each other and Sebastian’s magic washes into me, making it hard to focus.

“So,” he says. “It seems we’re in quite the predicament.”

“That we are,” I agree.

“What, then, do you propose we do about it?”
