I fell back against the sand laughing. “God, I love you, Zee. But you’re going to get mauled petting an animal you shouldn’t!”

“Careful, Sharky, I shouldn’t have petted you either.”

“If you’re lucky, I’ll let you do it again.”

She curled into me for a delicious kiss and against my lips, she said, “Oh, I’m feeling very lucky indeed.”

The sun sank down into the sea as we headed inland from the beach. I led Coop to where I knew there was shelter and a freshwater spring. Our first order of business after rehydrating was to build a fire. We worked on that until we had a decent blaze. Coop flashed his dimples. “What next?”

I slowly zipped my wetsuit down, rolling the top half off my shoulders till it hung at my waist. “I think I misspoke when I said I didn’t want to swim anymore.”

“Oh?”

“Care to join me?” I asked as I peeled off the rest of my wetsuit.

“Are we really going for another swim?”

I grinned as I tugged the strings from my bikini top and let it fall away. “I think the technical term for it is skinny-dipping. You coming?”

He started pulling off his own wetsuit and trunks. “Right behind you, of course!”

Fully naked, I rushed to toward the clearwater spring as Coop chased after me. I led him past the small bonfire and across the large flat rock I used to lay on and dove into pond. The cold refreshing water stripped the salt and sweat from our skin and hair in a flash. We surfaced in unison and our bodies immediately tangled, sleek and slippery, as we kissed. For a long while, we just held on to each other. Thankful to be alive and together.

Coop scooped me against him as he carried me from the spring. We settled in on the smooth rock next to fire, ostensibly to dry our bodies and warm back up. But we both grinned like fools as we started kissing and tangling our bodies together again. As long and tiring as our day had been, we didn’t go hard for each other. Our touches were caresses, or kissing, exploring and languid.

We were Adam and Eve, naked on our island of Eden, alone. Whether we had all the time in the world or it was our last night on earth, this was just how we wanted to spend it.

His wide palm smoothed up my back. His fingers skimmed over my skin with soft intimacy. The pads of his fingertips swirled along the edge of my hairline, sending waves and rushes of pleasure cascading through me. He whispered how beautiful I was as his lips teased my earlobe, and his breath warmed my shoulder. His cheek, rough with stumble, felt like sandpaper, but I nuzzled against it anyway.

Threading my fingers through his hair, I brought him to my lips and he rolled me to my back. I parted my legs, making room for his body to settle over mine. With no pretense, no hesitation, he pushed fully inside of me. Breaking our kiss, he threw his head back as we both gasped. Him inside of me…sheer, deep, filling perfection.

The rock was cool and hard against my back, while Coop’s chest pressed warm and solid against my breasts. The soft hair over his pecs teased my hardened nipples as he started a slow, rhythmic thrust. His thighs brushed against my mine as our bodies shifted and rocked, ground and thrust. Our lips collided again, tongues wrapping with each other as we panted and groaned with every feeling, the small ones, the big ones, the painful ones, and the relieving ones.

The fire crackled as a breeze picked up. But between us, the heat only increased as our arms and feet tangled. Unable to maneuver much, I threw my arms up over my head in an effort to stave off the intensity of my building orgasm.

Looking down into my eyes, Coop drove his body harder and faster into me. The sound of our skin slapping carried over the spring. Our scent smoldered between us. With one hand, he clasped my wrists together, gripping them hard. At his sudden possession of me, everything in my body tightened with the same force. I dug my nails into my palms, wincing as the cut on my left hand protested. Even though I was causing myself pain, I couldn’t release. The pressure inside had built too high, too strong. Like a singular rogue wave that threatened the shore.

“I…I can’t…I,” I stuttered.

“Give it to me, Presh.” Coop’s navy-blue eyes bored down. “Give me everything.”

A tsunami of feelings, thoughts, emotions crashed as I bucked, digging my heels into the rock beneath us, then the backs of his thighs, his hard ass, the rock again. I torqued against him as the cresting wave broke. The intensity forced a cry from my throat. Coop pushed in harder with his hips as my now pliant legs wrapped him. His arm flexed, his fist gripping my wrists, his chest rearing up. And I smiled watching it all, blissfully spent as he roared with his own relief. Warmth overflowed between us as we collapsed in the aftermath.

We snuggled, spooning until our energy came back. Well, his. I could’ve lain there purely sated through the night. But he scooped me into his arms and carried me back to the spring to wash off again. I protested and pounded his back and called him Sharky, but as I clung to him, I was happier than I’d ever been.

Coop spun me slowly around as he took in our surroundings with a laugh. “So, you’ve stayed here before,” he said, as if it were a swank hotel or trendy B&B instead of a small cave next to a spring-fed pond.

“Once upon a time, yes. When the Esmeralda went down, this is where I landed. I was here alone for several days. No morning breakfast buffet, I’m afraid. We’ll have to settle for the coconut milk and berries we collected for tonight.”

“Is it official? We’re staying the night?”

I flashed my wrist. “The helo, crew, and emerald all made it safely to Marakata. Hayes has been led to believe his plan worked.” That part had been easy, with Hayes always playing the boys-club angle to impress Zaki. A little praise from the great and powerful one was all it took to have Hayes to come running like a lapdog. “He’s en route now to Marakata, where he’ll be taken into our custody. The helo will be back to pick us up first thing in the morning.”

“It’s over then,” Coop said quietly as he brought me against his chest and dropped a kiss on my forehead.

The emerald was safe, the wreckage of the Esmeralda gone. Scott Hayes would be heavily interrogated and handled as needed. So if Coop was right and it was really over, why did it feel like it wasn’t?
