Jessica looks at me, her eyes narrowed. “They’re moving away. What if it’s not a trick and they’re my only way home?”

“Listen closer,” I reply. “Did you notice how she’s repeating her words?”

“So? They’ve given her a script.” She takes my shoulder, giving me a shake. “She’s crying, Cinq. She’s scared and probably heartbroken over thinking I’m dead.”

“Maybe, if that’s really her speaking,” I say as Jessica stands. I don’t let her get past me. “If your friend really is up there, then she’s safe with my people like you are with me.”

“Safe is nice, but I want to go home.” She takes my hands in hers, pleading with her eyes and her words. “I’m not making you go with me, but I have a better chance of getting home via Stacie’s new friends than I do with any of you.”

Ouch, S’Tou sends.

I glance around at the other two men and they’re also giving me sympathy looks. Part of me wants to say, fine. Run out there and let them take you from me. See how long you last out there when your heart wants to be here. Except, everything else in me can’t bear the thought of living without her. “No. You’re not leaving this planet. I forbid you to go meet the ship or your friend.”

She lets go of me with a slight shove. “You forbid me?”

“Yes, Jessica. I forbid you.”
