I don’t even know where we stand after last night. Sure, we had talked and agreed we wanted to see where this led to, but did that make us something? Or is this something we were keeping quiet? Did we have a future, or is this just temporary?
The questions circled through my mind as I checked out and placed my bag in my trunk. Still unsure of how to go about it, I planned to walk over to his mother’s shop for coffee, and maybe to gain some more insight. As I’m about to close the trunk, a voice startles me.
“Now, I know you weren’t planning on just sneaking away without saying goodbye.”
I turn quickly, to find him standing there in full uniform with a panty-melting smirk on his gorgeous face. My core throbs as I fully appreciate him in all his glory.
“Do you like a man in uniform or is it just me?” he asks with a smirk.
“I didn’t, until you.” His smirk turns into a full-blown smile.
“I like the sound of that.” He replies as he steps closer, pinning me against the open trunk of my car. His mouth coming down on mine in a display that is surely too obscene for the center of this small town.
“Get a room!” A voice calls out. I pull myself away to find a beautiful blonde female officer standing on the sidewalk with a smile on her face.
I burrow my face in his chest with embarrassment as he laughs. It’s a rumbling sound that has his whole body shaking, and mine along with it.
“Brey, you’re embarrassing her.” Danny chastises his fellow officer.
“Aw, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.”
“Jenni, this is Aubrey, Brey for short. She’s Stella’s daughter, and my new partner. Don’t pay her any mind, she’s grown up with me and the guys.” He tells me as I pull away from his chest to turn and face her.
His arms instantly go around my waist as he steps closer, his chest to my back. “Brey, this is Jenni, I’m sure you’ve heard plenty about her by now.”
“Hi Jenni, sorry about embarrassing you. I just wanted to razz on Danny like the guys always did to me in high school, I wasn’t thinking.”
“It’s okay. I’m just not as comfortable with public displays of affection yet.” She gives me a knowing nod and then shoots Danny a chastising glare like only a little sister could. “I actually had the pleasure of your mom’s company at breakfast this morning.”
She snorts a laugh, and Danny groans behind me.
“Somehow I believe it was more like an interrogation than a pleasant breakfast.” She tells me with a knowing wink. “Anyway, I just wanted to bust his balls for a minute and say hi to you. I have to go help Brendan pull his truck out of the mud now.”
“He got stuck again?” Danny asks and I assume this is another one of their friends.
“Yep, third time this week. For a country boy, he really is pretty helpless.” She rolls her eyes, “Anyway, I hope I’ll see you again soon.”
With a wave of her hand she’s off toward a huge 4x4 truck with a tow hitch in the back.
“Do you need to…” I begin to ask as I turn around to face him. Immediately missing the feel of his arms around me.
“Help her?” Danny finishes my sentence with a laugh. “No, Brey can handle herself, I’ll probably need to go out there in a little while and make sure Brendan’s balls are still attached though. I think she likes being the one coming to his rescue.”
“Poor guy.”
“Meh, I think we deserve it. We tortured her and Meghan in high school when it came to guys, this is just their version of payback.”
“Oh, I guess that’s okay then.”
He pulls me into another warm embrace, and we stand there for a moment with my cheek resting just above his beating heart.
“I want to see you again.”
“I’d really like that.”
“I’m off next weekend, how about I come visit you?”
“Really?” I ask in surprise, not having expected him to be willing to see me so soon.
“Really.”
“That would be perfect.”
“I can’t wait.”
“Me too.”
