I laughed. “True.”

“I’ve got you all checked in, Amelia. Jax will be out to get you in a moment.” Betty went back to her chair, answering the incoming call blinking on the screen. “J and N clinic, this is Betty, how may I help you? An appointment?”

I joined Kymber in the chairs. “J and N?”

“Yep, Jax brought Nurse Nancy on as a partner in the clinic.” Kymber waggled her eyebrows.

“It’s only been two weeks. What the hell else has changed?” I huffed.

I had always enjoyed volunteering at the clinic when Kymber and Diego didn’t need me for the twins. Jax had created an environment that didn’t scream doctor’s office. Like the chairs they sat in, for example, they were overstuffed leather chairs wide enough for a mother and her kids to hang out in, or for an older child to curl up in while they waited, or for an adult to relax in while they waited for their appointment. The floors were reclaimed wood, buffed to a shine, and covered sporadically with bright colored rugs. They had a video game corner, a reading corner, and a toy corner for the younger kiddos. The walls were a muted green, and tall, leafy plants were grouped together in areas, giving it a more outdoor than indoor feeling.

A large geode sat near the check-in desk, the amethyst refracting light and giving off a calming purple glow as the waterfall inside it flowed. It was a unique piece that Jax had found at one of the many artist fairs he went to. I couldn’t remember where, just that it had been a bitch for him to get it back here.

“Amelia,” Jax’s warm voice called.

“Good luck,” Kymber whispered as I stood up and walked toward Jax.

I smiled, my nerves finally starting to get the better of me. “Hey, Jax.”

He grinned and gave me a big hug. “Good to see you happy. Come on, let’s go have a chat first and see where we need to start.”

Jax led me into his office instead of an exam room. I tilted my head as he sat down in one of the chairs by his desk and pointed to the other. “Have a seat.”

“I’m here for an exam. Why did you bring me in here?” I sat in the chair he indicated.

Jax closed his eyes and took in a long deep breath, held it for a few seconds, slowly released it, and opened his eyes again. “Do you know why I am good at what I do?”

“You have had years of training, worked in the field, in the military, and finally here.” I didn’t understand why he was being so weird.

“True, but I also have an extra leg up on most of those in the shifter medical field.” He tapped his nose. “I can smell things down to a cellular level. Illness, disease, infection, and the smallest change within a body.” He leaned forward. “You, my friend, do not need a fertility exam.” He smiled. “I do believe you need to make a new appointment about six weeks out and make sure you bring your mates with you.”

I shook my head, still not understanding. “Why?” Then a heart-stopping fear came over me, and I gasped, “Am I dying?”

Jax laughed, pissing me off. “No, Amelia, you aren’t dying, but nine months from now, you might feel like it.”

I sat there staring at him, still not understanding until his words finally clicked. “Nine months?” I cried, “Are you sure? Positively sure?”

“Yes, you, my wonderful friend, are one hundred percent pregnant, and if your mates could get their heads out of the mating fog, they would have smelled it, too. Congratulations. I want to see you in six weeks. We should be able to hear its little heartbeat by then.”

“OH MY GOD!” I jumped up and flapped my hands, trying not to cry.

“Pet, what’s wrong?” Niko spoke at the same time Miguel said,

“Amelia, where are you? We are on our way,”

“I’m fine, great, wonderful. Oh my god, I can’t wait to tell you. I’m on my way home!” I replied.

“I gotta go.” I ran from the room, Jax’s laugh echoing behind me.

“Amelia, what’s wrong?” Kymber asked as she shot out of her chair, alarm on her face.

“Nothing. Nothing is wrong.” I wrapped my arms around her and danced in circles.

“Stop, you’re going to make me sick.” Kymber planted her feet, stopping our momentum.

“Oh, I’ve got to go home.” I tried to untangle myself, so I could run home.

“Amelia!” Kymber whisper yelled. “Stop, calm down.”
