CHAPTERTWO

“He’s coming.”

Amira glanced over at the petite avian shifter who was currently huddled in the corner of the small hunting cabin. Amanda Nelson held her one month old daughter snuggly to her chest, waves of terror pouring off her. Her dark brown hair hung limply around her face, tears rolling down her gaunt cheeks, leaving wet trails through the layers of dirt that covered them. She’d been starved and beaten daily for so long, Amira was afraid it would take her years to get over the traumatic experience of being kidnapped and held captive by the crazy hyena who was stalking them, if she ever did.

“I can feel him, Amira,” Amanda rasped, her small body shaking with fear. “He’s close… and he’s very angry. Full of rage at the idea that a mere female managed to take what was his from him.”

A slow smile curved up the corners of Amira’s mouth as she turned and walked over to the window, drawing back the curtain slightly so she could gaze out into the darkness. “Good. Let him come.”

That was exactly what Amira wanted.

She had snuck into the piece of shit shack Richard Davis lived in and stole the woman he was calling his mate, along with their child, right out from under him just two days ago. It was her plan all along to get him to follow her.

That sweet owl is not his mate, Amira’s dragoness hissed in her mind. He’s an entitled ass who needs to be taught a lesson.

Agreed. There was no way Amanda was his, and Amira was about to serve some much-needed justice, far away from the pack of innocent hyenas the bastard was alpha to.

“He will kill you to get to me.”

“He can try.” And Amira had no doubt that he would, but she wouldn’t be the one dying today.

“I can’t go back with him,” Amanda cried. “Please, don’t let him take me back.”

Amira left the window to go over and kneel down next to the terrified woman. Placing a hand gently on her arm, she promised, “The only place you and your daughter will be going is home, little one. Soon, this will all be over, and you will be able to move on with your life.”

“What life?” the shifter whispered, lowering her cheek to rest it on top of the baby’s head. “After everything that’s happened, I can’t return to my family.”

Amira frowned, tilting her head to the side as she watched Amanda closely. “Why not?”

“What if they don’t accept Haley?” The words were spoken so quietly, Amira had to strain to hear them. “She has the blood of a hyena shifter in her. They could disown both of us for that alone.”

Amira squeezed her arm gently, her heart going out to the young woman. Before she could reply, the distinct sound of a hyena’s high-pitched laughter filled the night, signaling the alpha’s arrival. He was not quiet, obviously excited that he’d found what he was looking for.

Amanda moaned softly, moving away from Amira and pushing herself as tightly into the corner as she could. “No! Oh, please, no!”

Amira slid a sai from its sheath in her boot and stood, all in one motion. “No matter what, you stay in this cabin until I come for you. Understand?” When there was no answer, she growled, “Amanda, you are not to move from where you are until I come for you. Tell me you understand.”

Amanda looked up, her bright blue eyes wide with stark fear as she nodded slowly. “I understand.”

“Don’t move,” Amira reiterated, before stalking over to the door and opening it. Stepping out onto the small porch, she shut the door behind her, making sure the lock clicked into place.

The bastard was waiting right outside in front of the small cabin, a cocky smirk on his face. “I found you.”

“So you did.” Amira didn’t bother to point out the fact that she’d left a trail behind that a child could follow. If the idiot wanted to believe he had a brain, let him.

For the next few minutes, her dragoness huffed. Won’t matter after that. He’ll be ashes.

We could always play with him a bit first.

That’s cruel, her animal purred. I like it.

“I want my mate,” the hyena alpha snarled, his eyes darkening as claws sprang from his fingertips. Slowly, he began to stalk in her direction, baring his fangs at her, letting loose another one of his annoying, barking laughs.

“She isn’t here,” Amira said calmly as she began to twirl the sai slowly, catching the shifter’s gaze, causing it to lock on her weapon in a small distraction.

“She is! I smell her!”

“Oh, you mean Amanda?” Amira asked, cocking an eyebrow and allowing a small grin to appear.

“Yes, dammit! My mate!” he growled, finally managing to pull his gaze from the sai. “She’s mine, and I want her back.”

“Actually, she isn’t yours,” Amira countered as she waved her hand slightly toward his feet, watching in satisfaction when several rattlesnakes began to take shape. “Which you already know.”

“What the hell?!” Richard screamed, glaring down at the snakes that had appeared in front of him out of nowhere. He scrambled back when one of them lunged at him, raking out with a claw, staring in shock when it sliced through nothing. A mirage only, but he wasn’t lucid enough to realize it.

Glancing up, Amira waved her hand again, smothering a grin when an eagle materialized out of thin air, dive bombing down with his sharp claws stretched out at the man who was becoming hysterical. He was jumping up and down to get away from the snakes whose rattlers were getting louder and louder by the second, while ducking and weaving as he tried to avoid the bird of prey above him.

He is no man, her dragoness scoffed. He is nothing. But, I have to admit, it is always fun when the hunter becomes the hunted.

It was, but Amira was quickly becoming bored with the game. What was funny at first, was just pathetic now. Not only that, but she knew Amanda was panicking inside the cabin. The poor female had been through enough.

It was time to end it.

Grasping her sai tightly in one hand, Amira waved her arm, dispensing of the illusions, before making her way down the porch stairs and toward the asshole alpha. “We both know that woman in there is not your mate, Richard Davis.” She refused to call him alpha to his face. He was no alpha. He was nothing.
