“It’s not the way you look, or anything you like. It’s more like, she reminded me of you in an intangible way, you know?”

I nodded and pretended I did.

“What happened?” I asked.

“She got a job in California. Wanted me to go with her. But I said that I couldn’t leave my family. I said I needed to be closer to Castleton. We just wanted different things out of life, that’s all. Didn’t make it hurt any less, though,” she said.

I wondered about her, this mystery girl. How had they met? What did she look like? When had they kissed the first time? Had Natalie known she liked girls before then? Had she gone on dates with other girls? Did she still like guys?

The questions fell like the raindrops, rolling down the back of my mind.

“It just wasn’t meant to be,” Natalie said, after a long silence.

“Do you believe that? That some people are destined for each other?” I asked.

I wasn’t sure if I did.

“I’ll let you know,” she said, just as the rain slowed and the sun peeked through the clouds.

I turned the truck back on and pulled out of the parking lot.
