Chapter 6

“Let’s do something different tonight. I don’t want to have dinner at the hotel,” Natalie said a while later.

“Okay, can you see what places are close to it that you might like? I’m not picky.” I could foot the bill for one meal out. My paycheck came in tomorrow, so I was going to be in a much better financial position.

“Okay, I’ve got it,” she said, and the robot in her phone told me where to go.

“Seriously?” I said, when I pulled into the parking lot and looked at the sign of a notorious restaurant.

“They have really good wings,” she said, but I could tell she was hiding a smile.

“They’re also known for something else,” I said. Most people weren’t coming for the wings. They were coming to gawk at the busty waitresses.

“Don’t be such a prude,” she said, hopping out of the truck and heading for the entrance.

I sighed and followed her.

“I don’t know where to look,” I said, when we got inside. There were just…so many boobs. Everywhere. As far as the eye could see.

The hostess seated us and then our waitress came over and I could feel how red my cheeks were. I wasn’t a prude, but I also wasn’t used to seeing so much of this in my face. Castleton had me a little sheltered.

Natalie ordered for both of us, and I could see she was enjoying herself. It didn’t escape my notice that she was checking out every single one of the waitresses.

“Are you trying to be mean to me?” I asked.

“No. I thought you’d like it.”

“I mean, I do, but…” I trailed off.

She reached out and squeezed my shoulder.

“Just relax. It’s fine. We’re going to tip well.”

I was trying to relax, but it wasn’t easy. If I was here with Paige, things would be different. Being here with Natalie was…

I couldn’t put my finger on what made it different, but it was. It was completely different.

Our waitress was cute, and probably a few years older than we were, with long red hair and pouty lips. She brought our food and I tried to thank her, but the words wouldn’t come out of my mouth, so Natalie had to do it for me.

“Are you okay? You have seen a hot girl before, yes?” I mean, I had, but there were so many of them concentrated in here at the same time. It was causing my system to break down.

The wings were great, and after a while, I got a tiny bit more comfortable with the atmosphere.

There were a lot of loud men drinking beer that I wasn’t so fond of, but it wasn’t that different than a rowdy night at the bar in town. At least I knew I’d never see any of these guys ever again. More often than not, my brother was one of the loudest and rowdiest bar patrons, and if he was there, I would turn around and go home. I wondered if those nights out were going to change after the baby came.

“You okay over there?” Natalie asked.

“Yup,” I said, licking my fingers. That was probably rude, but the sauce really was excellent.

“So, is our waitress your type?” she asked, and I choked on a bite of chicken.

“Why do you want to know?” Obviously, I’d never come out to her, but she knew I was a lesbian. She might have moved away from Castleton, but you never really left, and she’d always hear the juiciest of gossip from Gretchen. That girl collected gossip like some people collected books or guns.

“Just curious. This is small talk, right?” It seemed much more personal than small talk, but I didn’t say anything.

“I’m not sure what my type is. I know it when I see it,” I said. That was as clear an answer as I could give. It wasn’t even someone’s looks, necessarily. It was that thing, that vibe. That connection that you had that you couldn’t put your finger on. You’d see someone and zing, there it was.

I tried to explain that to Natalie, but my words came out in a jumble.
