Chapter Nineteen

My hands shookas I drove to Natalie’s parent’s house. It was late, but I didn’t care. I had to talk to her. I had to tell her. I couldn’t go one more second without her knowing.

Somehow, I made it in one piece and sent her a message that I was outside her parent’s house and we needed to talk.

I’m not at home. I’m at your house.

What?

How did you get to my house? I asked.

Gretchen gave me a rideshe said.

Well, I guess she was good for something.

I’ll be right there.

As I drove, it started to rain softly. When I pulled into my driveway, Natalie was sitting on the steps, waiting for me. She didn’t have a coat or an umbrella or anything.

I got out of the car.

“How long have you been here?” I asked.

“A while,” she said. Her hair was already plastered to her scalp, her curls dripping with moisture.

I stopped when I was a few feet away from her.

“I was at Paige and Esme’s,” I said. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay,” she said, standing up and walking down the steps toward me.

“We should talk,” she said.

“We should.”

She paused less than a foot away.

“Can I do something first?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said. I was getting wet, but I didn’t care.

“Can I kiss you?” she asked.

I nodded and she reached for me as I reached for her.

Our lips crashed together like thunder. Her skin was soft and wet from the rain. She tasted fresh and cool.

She kissed me desperately. Hard. Relentlessly.

She kissed me as if she was trying to tell me something.

I kissed her back, answering with the same intensity.

I needed to tell her.

I broke the kiss and blurted it out before anything else could happen.

“I love you,” I said.
