“I know,” she said. “I love you too.”

That settled, we went back to kissing, and then we were stumbling up the steps and into the cabin, tearing at each other’s clothes the whole way.

We managed to get everything off, including shoes, without major injury, and then there she was, pushing me up against the door and fucking me with her hand while kissing me so hard I couldn’t breathe even if I’d wanted to.

I returned the favor. It wasn’t sweet or gentle, it was needy and essential.

We both came fast and hard, sliding to the floor with shaking legs that would no longer hold us up.

She held me through the aftermath, and I kissed her wet hair.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“For what?” she asked in a drowsy voice.

“For asking for the break. I just…Wyatt got to my head and I thought I was being sensible. I was trying to do the right thing, but you’re the right thing. This is the right thing.” It didn’t matter what it looked like to other people. Who gave a flying fuck what Wyatt thought?

“I was all set to give you space and then I just couldn’t. I couldn’t leave things like that. I want to apologize for taking it badly,” she said.

“It’s okay,” I said. “I forgive you.”

“Good. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, can we get up off the floor? I’m freezing,” she said.

We got up and headed right for a hot shower, washing each other and kissing and reuniting.

“It feels like it’s been forever and it’s been like one day,” she said.

“I know. We’re awful.”

“Terrible,” she said, slipping her soapy hand between my legs.

“The worst,” I panted as she stroked me.

After the showerwe put on our softest pajamas and had tea and croissants from Sweet’s with raspberry jam while we sat in bed together.

“We really don’t do well at being apart,” Natalie said. She’d been breaking off pieces of croissant, slathering them with jam, and then feeding them to me. Bonus was I got to lick the jam from her fingers.

“I mean, we were apart for a long time,” I pointed out.

“Yes, but now it’s different. Now we know what we were missing.”

I ate another bite of croissant from her fingers.

“You have a point.”

We finished our snacks and snuggled together in the dark.

“Are we going to talk about the fact that I said I loved you and then you said it back, or just let it go?” I asked. I’d been thinking about it in the back of my mind since the words had come out of my mouth, and I’d heard them from hers.

“No, I figured we’d get around to it,” she said. “Those were some pretty big words to say.”

“They were.”

“Those words change a lot of things.”

“Do they?” I asked.
