Alivia picked two lamps, two shell wreaths, and several shell ornaments that Natalie carefully packed up in boxes for her.

“I can carry these to your car for you,” Natalie said.

“You don’t need to do that,” Alivia said, taking the stack of boxes from her.

“Let me help,” I said, taking two of them, leaving Alivia with the two biggest that had the lamps in them. I didn’t trust myself to carry those and not drop them.

“Ready?” she asked me after we’d said goodbye to Em and Natalie.

The two of us carefully made our way to Alivia’s car and then set the boxes in the backseat.

“Thanks,” Alivia said, leaning against the car.

“Yeah, no problem.”

She had to get back to work, and I was trying not to feel too many emotions about it.

“This was a good day,” she said. “Thanks for inviting me.”

“Of course. And thanks for inviting me on your little furniture trip.”

“Yeah, it will be a lot more fun with someone to talk to,” she said.

“Just so you know, I sing along with the radio,” I said.

“That doesn’t bother me at all,” she said. “I’ve heard your voice before.”

That’s right. She’d seen me belting it at karaoke.

“That wasn’t my best work. Wait until I really show you what I can do,” I said.

“Looking forward to it,” she said, winking.
