“She is really hot,” Natalie said later on while we sat on the couch and watched one of our favorite movies. Natalie was busy knitting a blanket beside me. It was her wedding present to Linley and Gray. I was a loser who had just gotten something from the registry.

“I know. That’s why I chose her in the first place. I mean, I’d never picked anyone up at a bar and I didn’t know what I was doing. I was shocked that she even looked in my direction,” I said, remembering that night. I’d been so nervous I’d almost gone home without even talking to anyone. But there she was, standing next to the dart boards, and I’d known she was the one I wanted to talk to, even if I didn’t take her home.

“Do you think she wants to stay in Castleton?” Natalie asked, counting her stitches.

“I honestly don’t know. She’s kind of an enigma. Doesn’t like to talk about herself but is perfectly chatty about other shit.”

Except now I knew why she was here, and why she worked so much. I was going to keep her confidence by not revealing anything to Natalie.

“Enigmas are always interesting,” Natalie said. “And hot.”

“She’s definitely both of those things,” I said. And sexy. And beautiful. And intriguing. And frustrating. So many other things.

“Well, I hope she sticks around. I like the way you smile when she’s around.”

I wasn’t aware I smiled in any particular way when Alivia was around, but I guess I didn’t get to see my own face that much.

“That’s coming out really nice,” I said, changing the subject to her blanket. I didn’t want to talk about Alivia and me anymore. It was too much.

I laid out my outfits on Friday night for my day with Alivia. My options were to dress more conservative or more sexy. The weather was going to be hot, so I was definitely going to go with a dress. One had a high neck in front, plunging in the back, and went down to my ankles, while the other was short and low-cut and had a pattern of watermelon slices on it. Sexy.

I needed advice, so I ended up sending pictures of both dresses to Natalie.

Definitely the pink one she replied.

It was my more favorite of the two, so I set it on the chair in my room and found the pink sandals that went with it. I also had a watermelon slice necklace to complete the look.

Cute and sexy.

It was weird to have Alivia pick me up, but the air conditioning in her car was going full blast and it was a relief as I slid into the passenger side.

“Hey,” I said, smiling at her.

“Hey,” she said. “Wow, you look…really good.”

“So do you,” I said, and that wasn’t a lie. She had her business clothes on today: long black shorts with a matching blazer, and a royal blue shirt on underneath.

“Are you hungry?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said. I was absolutely starving.

“There’s this cute little place I found beside the highway that I thought you might like,” she said.

“Sounds good. I’m not picky.” I would honestly eat anything right now.

“Great,” she said, pulling away from my apartment.

“You can put on whatever you want,” she said, pointing to the radio.

“Even my road trip playlist?” I asked.

“Sure…” she said, but she didn’t sound convinced.

“It’s fun, I promise,” I said.
