“Want some?” I asked Alivia, who was still at the table and chatting with Esme about books.

“I don’t mind sharing,” I said, pushing the plate between us.

“Thanks,” she said, taking a cookie that was frosted to look like Linley’s engagement ring.

I watched Alivia talk with Esme, occasionally adding my own comments, but mostly just watching her.

She was fascinating to me.

I loved the fluid way she moved, the way the tone of her voice changed. The move of her graceful fingers when she got excited about something.

Completely mesmerizing.

“You’re staring,” Natalie said in my ear.

“I don’t care,” I said. “I can’t help it.”

“If you want to be with her, just be with her,” Natalie said.

I shook my head and looked away from Alivia.

I didn’t trust myself not to make another mistake. I had been so sure, so absolutely sure, that my ex and I were destined to be together and I’d been wrong. Who was to say I wasn’t wrong about Alivia?

“Fine, don’t fall in love with her. Just have a good dirty night together to get it out of your system,” she said.

I’d already tried that, but maybe I needed to give it another go? Just one more night to completely get over all these feelings about Alivia. One night, just sex.

“I’ll think about it,” I said, and looked back at Alivia, who just so happened to be looking at me.

“Hey,” she said, picking up a mini cupcake, peeling the paper off and eating the entire thing in one bite.

“Hey,” I said, grabbing a cookie that had glittery frosting on top.

“I’m glad I came tonight,” she said.

“Me too,” I said, feeling my body lean closer to hers. I couldn’t help it.

I watched as her eyes flicked down to my lips and then back up. She leaned closer to me. “You look really beautiful tonight. I hope you know that.”

One hand brushed my leg under the table and I had to control my breathing.

“Thank you. You look really good too.” She always looked good, but one of my favorite looks was Alivia in a suit.

“I really want to take you home tonight,” she said, and I stopped breathing altogether.

“I want that too,” I said after a second of hesitation.

“Good. We’ll wait until everyone else leaves and I’ll drive you.”

She sat back and winked at me before devouring another cupcake as if nothing had happened.

I was really glad I was sitting down. The pounding of my heart was so loud, I was convinced all my friends could hear it.

The evening wound down, with most of the relatives heading back to the hotel, or wherever they were staying tonight. I said a brief hello to my parents and got a huge hug from my grandmother before she left. My friends trickled out as well, until it was just me, Natalie, Em, and Alivia.

Natalie said something to Em, who nodded in a knowing way. I pretended not to notice.

“We’ll see you tomorrow,” Em said in a sing-song voice.
