Chapter 14

“Hey, you want some pizza?” Natalie asked as I walked through the door of Em’s cabin. It was small and cozy and cute, with a little porch on the back that looked out over the dark lake. Plus, it was owned by her family, so her rent was pretty cheap. I was a little jealous.

“I’d love some pizza,” I said, taking my shoes off as Em got off the couch and came to the kitchen to get me a plate.

“I feel like I’m still hung over,” she said, handing me the plate and a paper towel.

I sat on the beautiful dark blue velvet couch next to Natalie. Em’s taste was eclectic and I loved it. Although, if I got this couch for myself, I would have gotten it in pink, of course.

Natalie and Em had been cuddling while watching a documentary and they asked me if I wanted to watch anything.

“I’ve already seen this, so go for it,” I said, taking a huge bite of pizza. It was lukewarm, but I’d eat pizza at any temperature.

“Don’t tell me what happens,” Natalie said, covering her ears.

“I won’t,” I said with a laugh. Natalie loved anything true crime, which I found a little weird, but that was her thing.

“You sure you’re okay?” Em asked, looking at me sideways. Natalie had done Em’s brown hair in braids, and it looked really cute on her.

“Yeah, uh, Alivia and I hung out today and she kind of asked me what we were doing, and I’m still trying to figure out what we’re doing and if I want to keep doing it.” That was a little convoluted, but they got the idea. Natalie paused the documentary.

“We’re listening,” she said as she and Em gave me their full attention.

I really shouldn’t have said anything.

“I just…I don’t trust myself, you know? We’ve talked about this. I don’t trust my heart to make a good decision. I don’t trust that this isn’t more than me just being really horny for her.” I laughed and they did too.

“It’s okay to be horny,” Em said.

I made a frustrated sound. “I know that. But in my life, horny and heart are hand in hand.”

“That was quite an alliteration,” Natalie said.

“Thank you. I just need time to think about it,” I said.

“If you need to bounce ideas off anyone, we’re here for all your idea-bouncing needs,” Em said, setting her chin on Natalie’s shoulder.

“Thanks. I guess I just didn’t feel like being alone at my apartment tonight,” I said.

“We get it,” Natalie said. “You can always come hang out with us.”

I knew she meant it.

“Thanks, you’re the best.” I gave her a little hug and she squeezed me back.

I stayed to watch the end of the documentary and then another before feeling okay with going back to sleep alone at the apartment.

“Thanks for the pizza and the company,” I said, hugging them both.

“Anytime.”

I left the two of them with their arms around each other like a perfect couple postcard.

I slept uneasily and was grumpy when I woke up, but I put a damn smile on my face and went to work. There were donuts at work, so that improved my outlook somewhat.
