“Oh my god, I love you!” I said without thinking. “I mean, I love them!”

Alivia stared at me. “That’s not what you said.”

“I know,” I said, completely panicking. That wasn’t what I meant to say! I was going to invite her in, treat her to a gourmet meal and tell her yes, I would like to have an adult relationship with her, if that was agreeable. No, instead I had to fucking tell her I fucking loved her.

“I didn’t mean to say it,” I said.

“But did you mean it?” she asked.

I opened my mouth to say no, but then I couldn’t. I couldn’t say I didn’t love her.

“Well, shit,” I said. “This isn’t how this was supposed to go, at all.”

I wanted to crawl under the couch.

“Do you love me?” she asked, stepping close, fire in her eyes.

I stared at her for what felt like a million heartbeats.

“Yes,” I said. One word that changed literally everything. I definitely hadn’t meant to fall in love with her, let alone tell her that I had tonight. All the signs had been there and I’d ignored them. The truth was standing right there in front of me, wearing suspenders with donuts on them.

She nodded. “That’s good. Because I wanted to tell you that I love you too. I want to stay here, in Castleton, with you.” I realized she’d been holding one hand behind her back as a bouquet of flowers fell to the floor. It didn’t matter.

“You want to stay with me? And you love me?” My voice wouldn't stop squeaking with disbelief. Everything was happening so fast.

“I had this whole plan to tell you that I found a place to rent and I brought you flowers,” she said, turning around and looking at the flowers she’d dropped.

“Let me get this right,” I said, holding up one hand. “You love me, and I love you, and you’re staying in Castleton?”

Alivia looked up at me. “That seems about right, yes.”

I burst out laughing and flung myself into her arms.

“I can’t believe this,” I said as she held me.

“Me neither,” she said, and I leaned back so I could look at her.

“Why did you decide to stay?” She set me on my feet, but kept hold of both of my hands, which were shaking.

“Because the thought of leaving you was the worst thing I could think of. I couldn’t imagine a life without you in it anymore. You’re all I can see, Charli.”

Her words made me cry, and then she hugged me again and then the timer went off because it was time to eat.

“Are you hungry?” I asked.

“I’m hungry, but not for food,” she said, her eyes blazing.

“What are you hungry for?” I asked, starting to walk backwards toward my bedroom.

“You. I’m going to devour you, Charlie.”

My hands went to the zipper on my dress, struggling to get it down so I could slide out of the dress, letting it fall to the floor.

“What are you waiting for?” I asked, opening the bedroom door. “Come and get me.”

Alivia did devour me, and I fucked her back and we lay in bed together, talking about everything.
