WEST, AKA THE SMOOTH TALKER

I’m startled when Alexisbails from the hotel. I have no idea what triggers her to run. Assuming the drunk guy’s horny redhead thing did it, I warn him to get gone before I return. After asking the bartender to watch our drinks and her shoes, I track down my dream girl.

When Alexis sees me coming, her defeated expression makes me realize she was running from me. Now, I’m really confused.

But I coax her back to the hotel bar and take our drinks to a small booth. Alexis grips the glass and eyes the exit.

“Why did you take off?” I ask as she sits away from me.

“It’s complicated.”

“Is it really, or are you just trying to get out of explaining?”

“I’m a hip chick undaunted by a chaotic world,” she says before her pretty pink lips twist into a pout. “But you make me stumble.”

“How?”

When Alexis shrugs and scoots away from me, I consider when her mood shift occurred.

“You think I’m nuts to talk about our future.”

“Well, yeah.”

Skimming my fingers down her back, I try to make her understand. “The first time I saw you, I was floored by your beauty. I grew up in a family full of attractive people. We’re like the cool kids in Tumbling Rock. So, I rarely go stupid over pretty girls. But when I saw you, I felt like every other chick I dated before was a gray blob. There you were, though, colorful and confident. I knew you were mine.”

Alexis sips her drink, still struggling.

“But then you were gone,” I say to fill the silence. “I kept thinking you’d come back to me and say how you felt the same way. But that didn’t happen. When I told my family how I’d met the girl of my dreams, they laughed at me. I don’t mean that figuratively. Like they pointed and laughed until the chicks needed to pee. It was all a joke, but I remained certain.”

Now, Alexis seems to pity me.

Since that’s a step up, I continue. “Then, years passed, and I doubted myself. How could you be my dream girl if you were gone forever? I must have been mistaken. You were just a dream. No way could you be that beautiful and perfect.”

“I’m not, though.”

“Maybe in your eyes, but you’re not supposed to find yourself hot.”

Alexis cocks a brow. “Don’t you think of yourself as hot?”

“Okay, yeah, but I can see why most hot people don’t think of themselves that way.”

“No one else sees me like you do,” she says, sounding so sad.

“Good. You’re mine, and I don’t want other men getting hard over you.” When Alexis isn’t convinced, I continue, “When I saw you this week, I felt relief knowing you were real. I’d been disappointed when you walked away, but I could get over that. The idea of you not being real was killing me, though. I’d been so certain.”

“So, it’s like an ego thing?”

“No, it’s all about my heart,” I say, resting her hand against my chest. “It was so certain about you, but then you were gone. My heart lost its chance. Soon, it doubted you were ever real. But you are, and I get to feel this way again. That’s why I demand all your time, and I have big plans for us. My heart is afraid to lose you again.”

Alexis studies me with her dark blue eyes. One corner of her mouth curves up, offering me a half-smile. But she remains wary.

“I’m not a sad person,” she mutters.

“Okay.”

“But you make me sad.”

Now, I’m pouting. “Why?”
