After losing her latest attempt at “talking sense” into me, Ma-Poppy decides she’ll save her energy for whatever loser Val falls in love with.

“Or the man who finally knocks up Tuesday,” my brother mutters, having been eavesdropping.

“That’s not going to suck,” Pa-Emmett replies, snarling at the imaginary man. “But let’s enjoy a movie and get a feel for Alexis.”

I smile at my father, who nods at my appreciation. He’s less excited when I decide to hug him. Suddenly, Ma gets in on the action, allowing them to fondle each other. I squirm away while Val chuckles at my horror.

“I was looking up that movie the ginger mentioned,” Val announces. “It’s on the local horror channel. Lots of one-star reviews. It could be exactly the kind of crap we’re looking for to make tonight extra special.”

“Thanks, bro,” I say and hug him before he can escape. “Let my love settle into your weak bones and pathetic spine.”

Val calls my bluff by hugging me tightly. We continue this game of chicken until I’m ready for a shower. He wipes a fantasy tear from his cheek.

“Love has made you adorable, dickhead,” he says before getting the movie ready to stream.

Soon, Alexis cuddles next to me on the sofa. Tuesday sits on the floor with Shirley MacLaine. Warren Beatty cuddles up with Ma-Poppy and Pa-Emmett on their reclining couch. Val tugs a bean bag chair from his room, so he can stretch out without encroaching on my cuddle fest.

Once again, my future rests in the palm of my hand. Alexis and I will have our house nearby. I can see my family in and out of our place. We’ll get a cat and name it after an actor.

I never once doubted Alexis was mine. After tonight, I hope her worries are over, too.
