“I think I can give you a prediction,” I say and exhales softly before staring out at the restaurant. “I see you surrounded by redheaded raccoons who shine as bright as the sun like their dad. I also imagine a future where you’ll realize I’m more of a lemon than a lime. Yet, you’ll never admit you were wrong. After all, women need their secrets.”

Poppy smiles. “That they do.”

“I’m a clown and a huckster, but I promise I’ll suffer to make sure West doesn’t.”

Her smile disappears, and I worry I’ve said something wrong. Poppy slides out of the booth, comes around to my side, and wraps herself around me.

“My boy loves with the best heart, and you’re worthy of it.”

Unaccustomed to motherly love, I soak in all the soft warmth West had in spades growing up.
